Comedian Learnmore Jonasi turned a $27 million lawsuit into stand-up material in his recent social media post.

The 32-year-old comic has been sued by Grammy-winning composer, Lebo M (Lebohang Morake) over a viral joke about The Lion King. According to the reports online, Jonasi claimed on the One54 Africa podcast, that the lyrics Nants'ingonyama bagithi Baba from the Zulu chant in The Circle of Life, translate to Look, there’s a lion. Oh my God.

The South African composer called it a fabricated distortion of its true meaning in his suit while suing Jonasi. He says in the suit that the line originally means - All hail the king, we all bow in the presence of the king.

Mocking his lawsuit, Jonasi took to Instagram to share a post selling limited-run tees and hoodies with a Simba-style theme. The caption of his post reads:

“Get your T-shirt now, You can really help me pay these legal fees.”

Learnmore Jonasi continued writing about his intentions as a “passionate creator” who meant no harm. He said that he has been facing legal fees for defending his right to speak and tell jokes. He urged people to support him in the campaign by donating:

“big or small, will directly go toward my legal representation, so I can fight this unjust claim and protect my livelihood. Please help me raise the funds needed so I can keep telling my story.”

In a fresh update on the page, Learnmore Jonasi posted a heartfelt thanks to the donors for supporting him in his campaign. On the other hand, he has launched a new merchandise line, selling custom t-shirts as a fun and direct way to help cover legal fees. The design pokes fun at the situation through a Lion King-themed artwork. It shows his cartoon holding up Simba-style with captions:

“look, it’s a lawsuit. Oh my god.”

He has been heavily promoting them on his Instagram and Facebook. Proceeds from the merch will go toward the legal battle.

According to a Rolling Stone report, Learnmore Jonasi posted a TikTok video capturing the moment he was served lawsuit papers from Lebo M onstage during a performance at The Laugh Factory in West Hollywood.

Morake filed the lawsuit on March 16, accusing Jonasi of defamation, trade libel, misrepresentation, and intentional harm through false claims about the Circle of Life Zulu chant.

The opening track from Disney’s 1994 film The Lion King was composed by Elton John, and the lyrics were written by Tim Rice. The film version is famously sung by Carmen Twillie and Lebo M.
