Romantic pairings on General Hospital have kept viewers invested and guessing for decades. While some couples, such as Edward and Lila Quartermaine, continue to represent iconic relationship goals, others, like Drew and Willow, tend to bring out the worst in each other. Over the years, the soap has featured countless romances, but only a select few have left a lasting impact. Some couples have found their way back to each other after years apart, while others have managed to remain friends despite divorce and heartbreak. Here are five unexpected pairings that have a genuine reason to belong together.
5 surprising couples and the logic behind their partnerships
1) Franco Baldwin and Elizabeth Webber

Franco Baldwin (James Franco and Roger Howarth) was initially a sinister villain and a serial killer. His early arc found him terrorizing Port Charles residents, including the family and friends of Nurse Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst). No GH fan would want sweet Elizabeth paired with the criminal.
However, soon Franco had a brain surgery and a tumor removal. This brought out a change in his personality. The artist in Franco made a favorable impression on the empathetic Elizabeth, a single mother. Moreover, Franco became the ideal, caring father Liz’s boys needed, making a loving family. This made Franco’s death devastating and Elizabeth’s grief palpable.
2) Maxie Jones and Damian Spinelli

Without doubt, this is one of the oddest pairs in Port Charles. On one hand, fans have the sophisticated, chic Maxie Jones (Kristen Storms), while on the other is the eccentric hacker, Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson). When the high-maintenance fashionista got together with the quirky tech-geek, fans were amused.
However, their pairing made sense due to their contrasting personas bringing out the best in the other. While Spinelli’s love and dedication softened Maxie’s sharp personality, the latter’s support injected confidence into the tech-wizard’s shyness. Over the years, their devotion towards each other made them less of a comic pair and more of a supercouple. Maxie’s recent move of choosing Spinelli over “Nathan” (Ryan Paevey) puts a stamp of approval on this loving couple.
3) Alexis Davis and Ric Lansing

The pairing of Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Ric Lansing (Rick Hearst) has always seemed unusual because they often operate on opposite sides of the moral spectrum. While Ric has frequently aligned himself with schemers and questionable causes, Alexis has spent much of her life fighting for justice. Moreover, Ric is manipulative and calculating, while Alexis is known for being direct and strong-willed. As expected, their romance has been dramatic, complicated, and often volatile.
However, recent events have blurred some of those differences. Alexis held Ric hostage after he extorted money from her, exposing a flaw in her otherwise respectable image. At the same time, the experience appeared to change Ric, who has become more focused on his daughter and family. With both characters possessing sharp legal minds, their chemistry fuels both compelling romance and entertaining conflict. Whether the storyline is building toward another reunion remains to be seen.
4) Molly Lansing and Cody Bell

Recovering from the sad episode of losing her baby, and her elder sister, and following a breakup with her doctor boyfriend, Molly Lansing (Kristen Vaganos), was not expected to fall for the uncouth drifter, Cody Bell (Josh Kelly). Strangely, to come out of her loneliness and to pursue her interest, legal expert, A.D.A. Molly, started writing a novel and based the protagonist cowboy on Cody, who has no real job or education.
However, through the process of writing and her sister, Kristina’s (Kate Mansi) shenanigans, Molly’s intrigue about Cody developed into love, in the style of “opposites’ attraction”, which was equally reciprocated by him. Recently, around New Year 2026, the two became intimate. This was soon followed by Cody’s care for Molly after her surgery for endometriosis proving him a person with a soft heart. While the two are very different personas, they make a loving pair.
5) Carly Spencer and Valentin Cassadine

Here is a romance that few General Hospital viewers saw coming. Even the two characters seemed surprised by their growing feelings. For decades, Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) and Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) existed in very different corners of Port Charles. With Carly's fierce loyalty to Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Valentin's long-running rivalry with the mob boss, the Spencer and Cassadine camps were often on opposite sides of the battlefield.
However, the two recently joined forces to bring down Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna). After Valentin escaped prison and took refuge in Carly's attic, their close proximity and shared mission gradually brought them together. Along the way, they discovered softer and more vulnerable sides of one another, laying the foundation for an unexpected slow-burn romance. Now, with their mission evolving and Valentin willing to sacrifice himself to save Carly's daughter, the connection between them has only deepened. If he survives the danger ahead, they could become one of Port Charles' most surprising couples.
