General Hospital has seen Alexis Davis, played by Nancy Lee Grahn, build a reputation as a legal powerhouse over the years in Port Charles. She portrays the ideal blend of good education and drive, along with a family heritage that emphasizes mental strength.

However, recently, Ric Lansing (Rick Hearst) has emerged as a formidable adversary for Alexis. He has reunited with his half-brother, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), and will represent the mob boss legally in the gray areas of his business dealings. There is a case to be made for both as the best attorneys in town, each with specific skills that make them stand out in the courtroom.

5 things that make Alexis a remarkable lawyer on General Hospital

1) Boasts best academic foundation

As longtime General Hospital fans know, Princess Natasha, later known as Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn), was sent to boarding school, followed by her graduation from Yale University. She presumably earned her Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. Armed with this education, she became one of Port Charles' legal stalwarts.

Although Alexis initially took time to get to know the people of Port Charles before challenging or representing them, she made a respectable place for herself through her skills as an attorney. She also did her best to overcome her childhood trauma and distance herself from the royal yet dark Cassadine family.

2) The sharp mind and temperament of a Cassadine

As mentioned before, Alexis was the daughter of the Cassadine prince, Mikkos, and inherited some of the family traits. While she rejected her family’s villainous legacy, she still shows traits that make her a true Cassadine. That includes her survivalist instinct, a sharp, calculating approach to situations, and an objective, cold detachment towards her cases.

These qualities help Alexis excel in her field, keeping her ahead of her adversaries. However, she has conquered the negative traits of the Cassadine family and tries to be on the right side of the law.

3) Adept at psychological manipulation

As part of her courtroom tactics, Alexis often uses emotional pressure on witnesses. She is an expert at identifying leverage connected to passions and reactions. Alexis manages to play it up to corner witnesses while influencing the judge or the jury.

An example of this was her arguments during Willow’s case, when she presented Portia and Tracy’s lies and pressed the two witnesses to raise reasonable doubt against the prime accused. Moreover, she uses tactics such as intentional slip-ups, moments, and tones to influence the jury’s thinking and decision.

4) Collaborative power of partner at law

While Alexis is an outstanding attorney herself, she teams up with another remarkable lawyer, her adversary-turned-friend, Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy). The two set up the legal firm, Miller & Davis, that employed Marco Rios (Adrian Achondo), who was murdered recently.

While Diane and Alexis make an invincible pair, even when they take cases alone, the partners share strategies and ideas that keep them ahead of their opponents, including the DA’s office.

5) Ability to handle pressure of personal connections

Unlike many other attorneys, Alexis does not fumble when some of her cases have an emotional connection. On the contrary, she becomes more focused, dangerous, and ruthless when she is desperate to win a personal case. That includes her fight to retain her law license and protect her daughters’ rights.

She also shows a greater ability to keep her cool when standing up to people she personally knows in town. Out of court, she shows similar sharpness in dealing with difficult situations, including joining forces with Ava Jerome (Maura West) and Kristina (Kate Mansi) to hold Ric hostage.

General Hospital: 5 ways Ric can contest Alexis’s competence

1) Threatening intel over Kristina’s crimes

Unfortunately for Alexis, Ric Lansing had formed an alliance with Ava to extort money out of Alexis. At the time, both Ric and Ava held intel on Kristina’s crime, attempting to commit homicide. Despite a fallout with Ava, Ric still has the blackmail-worthy evidence.

Despite his claim to be a changed man, he used the intel to draw money in the past, and he would likely not hold back if this evidence could damage Alexis’s reputation in court. He may challenge Alexis to protect her daughter rather than win a case against him.

2) Ruthless lawyer with winning mindset

Ric’s moral compass is faulty, and he is inclined to stray towards morally ambiguous actions to win his battles. He has shown his lack of ethics before, stooping to any level to win his cases, including adopting a beastly approach to get Ava acquitted in court. As such, when pitted against Alexis, he may prioritize results above all ethics.

On the other hand, Alexis shows both an ethical approach and an empathetic stance. In Ric, she may find a formidable adversary.

3) Employs shrewd legal strategies

Ric is an expert in corporate and criminal law. To add to his skills, he is adept at using legal strategies that put his opponents and their witnesses on the back foot. He doesn’t hesitate to coerce or badger as the situation demands. He may use tactics such as blackmail and aggressive interrogation to win his case.

Moreover, Ric is single-minded in his focus on winning, regardless of how that affects his family. This was evident when he helped Ava win her case, despite his daughter, Molly (Kristen Vaganos), rooting for Kristina. Also, Ric refuses to be intimidated by authorities, such as the mob or the police.

4) Exercises multiple skills at the same time

As mentioned before, Ric will stoop to crime if it benefits him. He employs this trait even in his courtroom wars. From manipulating little Wiley to blackmailing his former wife, Ric can do it all. Moreover, he uses his frustration with his failed marriage with Alexis and her closeness with Sonny as tools against her.

Since he is intelligent but volatile, Ric is an unpredictable opponent for Alexis. Besides confronting her using drastic measures, he may force her to compromise her ethics.

5) Exploits grey areas of attorney-client privilege unemotionally

Ric’s associations with people of questionable moral standing, such as Ava and Portia, have given him intel he can use without violating the attorney-client privilege. Similarly, he will have no qualms about taking advantage of legal grey areas and loopholes when using information in court.

Moreover, unlike Alexis, Ric does not get emotionally invested in his clients. As such, he can remain cut-throat and objective in his strategies. He can use his legal knowledge to threaten Alexis’s personal and professional life, forcing her to the brink of disbarment once again.
