5 Reasons General Hospital’s Sonny and Justine Aren’t Meant to Be

In a classic case of opposites attract on General Hospital, mob boss Sonny Corinthos is secretly dating ADA Justine Turner. While Turner came to Port Charles to be the one to finally put the mob boss behind bars, her interactions with Sonny brought them closer. Sonny helped Justine when she hurt her angle playing softball and she saw a new side of him when she heard Drew threaten Sonny last year.

The danger looming from rival mobster, Jenz Sidwell, also brought them together. Now, Sonny plans to leave the mob and is ready to bring their relationship public, but Justine still insists on secrecy.

5 Obstacles in the Path of Sonny and Justine’s Romance

1) Legal conflicts of interest

As General Hospital fans know, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Justine Turner (Nazneen Contractor) are on the opposite sides of the law. As the former ADA, and current interim DA, Justine planned to bring Sonny down. As such, she has been collecting intel and evidence against the mob boss. However, their unexpected romance has derailed her mission.

Unfortunately for Sonny, Justine is dedicated to her profession and career. By her own claims, she has worked hard and would not jeopardize her professional growth. If the case file on Sonny is reopened, Justine may not let conflict of interest stop her. Moreover, she may break up with him, if their relationship becomes public and the interim DA is rumored to be dating a former mobster.

Justine has also shown doubts about Sonny’s intentions. When discussing the punishment and plea deal of rival mobster, Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota), Justine shared her worry that Sonny may secretly get his rival killed in prison. While Sonny promised not to do anything to Sidwell, Justine’s approach hinted at her lack of trust towards Sonny.

Although Sonny has communicated his plan to walk away from the crime world for good, whether Justine will have faith in his goodwill and transformation, is as yet unclear. She even seemed inclined to think of Sonny as a vindictive person who attacks an unarmed enemy. This lack of trust does not bode well for the romance.

While General Hospital fans know that Justine arrived in town to catch and convict Sonny, she inadvertently fell for his charms. However, as mentioned before, she is careful about her reputation as that may impact her career for which she has worked hard for years. She refused to be seen with him or dating openly as a romance between the DA and a mobster will possibly bring a demotion for her.

As such, she insisted that they continue to date secretly even though Sonny was interested in openly accepting the relationship. However, Justine threatened to break up with him if he considered revealing the romance to the world. Unwilling to let her go, Sonny accepted her condition of maintaining secrecy. However, secrets may spill out and bring an end to this association.

In an unexpected turn of events, Sonny Corinthos is retiring from the mob. Although he and his hitman, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), had discussed this before, both walked away from the crime world in a matter of a week when Jason returned to town. However, Sonny has been keeping violence to a minimum and off the streets of Port Charles through his mob power.

When he makes the move to more legal businesses, there will be a void in his position. The vacuum could attract other mobsters to take advantage of Sonny’s decision and rule the mob scenario in the town. This may invite unwanted mob clashes and violence. As one of the prominent law enforcers in Port Charles, Justine will likely get caught up in the mob wars and see the end of her romance.

5) Possibility of the past catching up

Most of Sonny's relationships have ended in a disaster of some form, except for Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) who became his best friend even after divorce. As such, viewers may be skeptical about Justine as well. Just as Sonny interfered in Carly’s romance with Valentin (James Patrick Stuart), she may also cause trouble in his romance.

On the other hand, if Sonny’s past crimes catch up with him and his old cases are reopened, Justine would side with the law against him. Some of his old rivals may return to hurt his loved ones, including Justine. Moreover, Sidwell may have accepted a long sentence, but long sentences often turn shorter on soaps, meaning he could go after Sonny and Justine.
