5 Reasons GH’s Sonny May Not Be Behind the Pentonville Attack

General Hospital's Jenz Sidwell fell victim to the violence he feared as multiple Pentonville inmates surrounded and attacked him in his cell. Although they warned Curtis Ashford to stay away, he stepped in to stop the brutality and was beaten as well.

As expected, Curtis and Sidwell were brought in to the General Hospital where Curtis was diagnosed with broken ribs. However, Sidwell seemed to be badly hurt and moving in and out of consciousness. He even needed to be resuscitated once. When the PCPD officials tried to get more information, Sidwell cryptically pointed at Sonny while Curtis also mentioned Sonny. Dante Falconeri offered recuse himself and asked Joe Fitzpatrick to take over the investigation. Whether Sonny was behind the attack, however, needs to be explored.

5 Hints That Sonny Is Possibly Not the Culprit of GH's Latest Violence

1) The loud name-dropping by the hitmen

Recently, Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner) were assaulted inside Pentonville and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) is now the prime suspect behind the attack. The evidence against Sonny is the name-dropping done by the ringleader after beating the two victims, as reported by Curtis to the PCPD. However, here lies the discrepancy.

Mobsters rarely have their hitmen announcing their names in public to incriminate themselves. So, the assault could have been arranged by one of Sonny's many enemies who want to frame the former mobster. They may use Sonny's reputation as the mob boss of Port Charles despite his decision to quit the mob.

If GH fans look into the chronology of events, Sidwell asked Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) to represent him as his attorney and save him from Sonny's wrath. He told Alexis that there were rumors about Sonny trying to take him down and may kill him. At the same time, a group of goons warned Curtis to stay away from his cell, goading the former cop to warn Sidwell about the danger.

Moreover, they were setting up Curtis to be a witness to the oncoming violence against Sidwell. With the hitmen alerting Curtis and Sidwell alerting Alexis, it seems like a meticulous plan to set Sonny up for the crime. Whether this was planned by Sidwell to entrap Sonny while making an escape from the hospital is as yet unclear.

3) Sonny's intention as told to Sidwell and Justine

Sonny had visited Pentonville a few weeks ago to meet Sidwell. At the time, he had informed Sidwell about his intention to quit the crime world. In that context, he wanted to buy some of Sidwell's assets and properties. While Sidwell refused to believe Sonny's claim, he also threatened to get his revenge whenever he had the opportunity.

However, Sonny has remained away from the mob. He has also shown his interest in staying clean to make his relationship with ADA Justine Turner (Nazneen Contractor) work. When Justine asked him whether he might slip back, Sonny vehemently denied any such possibility. Knowing that Sonny is serious in his romantic relationship, he will likely not lie to Justine. As such, with no intention of returning to the mob, Sonny would not appoint hitmen to target a rival already facing prison time.

4) Drew and Ava's possible revenge plot

As GH fans know, Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) has an obvious animosity with Sonny and has roped in Sonny's longtime enemy and baby mama, Ava Jerome (Maura West). Besides Drew's dislike for Sonny and their old rivalry, both trying to take over Sidwell's assets makes for new contention. On the other hand, Drew holds a grudge against Sidwell for providing his wife with the paralytic drugs to keep Drew paralyzed for months.

As such, Drew would benefit most from this situation. If Sidwell is fatally injured and Sonny is charged for the crime, Drew stands to avenge himself on both his rivals while getting his hands on the above-mentioned assets. Moreover, he may not care about Curtis getting hurt, remembering his beef with his friend-turned-foe in the past.

Since Drew was a Pentonville inmate in the past, he may have an internal network to use on his target. His ally, Ava, may also know a few inmates due to her connection with the Jerome mob family. However, Drew's connection to the recent event is as yet unknown.

Here is another clue that is a possible giveaway that the recent hit on Sidwell was likely not ordered by Sonny. As a longtime mobster, Sonny's method of attacking his rivals is well-planned and neat. Longtime GH viewers have rarely witnessed Sonny ending with unexpected collateral and unwanted blood on his hands. If Sonny had ordered a hit on Sidwell, his instructions would ensure no one else was hurt.

However, Curtis was beaten up by the hitmen inside the prison, alongside Sidwell. Since Sonny has no beef with Curtis, this is too unprofessional for someone of Sonny's experience in the mob. However, if someone wanted to have Curtis landing at the hospital and giving a statement to the PCPD against Sonny, involving him in the violence makes sense. That cannot be Sonny since he would not want an injured Curtis incriminating him. As such, this hints at a well-executed frame-up against Sonny Corinthos.
