5 Reasons Why the Feud Between General Hospital's Sonny and Ava Makes No Sense

The feud between General Hospital's Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Ava (Maura West) has been heating up, and most (if not all) GH fans are scratching their heads in confusion. Why are these two suddenly at each other's throats over their shared custody of their daughter, Avery? Here are five reasons why their feud makes no sense.

They Were Co-Parenting Peacefully Up Until Now

Even though Sonny and Ava have had disagreements throughout the years, they had been co-parenting Avery in a civil manner up until now. We hadn't heard any mention of bad blood between them where Avery is concerned.

In July, after Sidwell (Carlo Rota) tried to shoot Ava in her art gallery, Ethan (Nathan Dean) sprang to her rescue and saved her life. Ava later shared a pleasant moment with Sonny at the gallery about the incident. Ethan got shot protecting Ava, and she was grateful and even surprised that he risked his life to save her. Perhaps she figured out that Sonny had previously instructed Ethan to protect her. We even saw a near-smile between Sonny and Ava during their conversation.

Sonny Has Had Bigger Things to Worry About Than Ava

This past year, Sonny has had many more problems and enemies to deal with than Ava. For example, he discovered that Ross Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) was responsible for the bombing in his apartment. That was the explosion that nearly killed Michael (then played by Chad Duell) and landed him in a burn unit. For months, Sonny battled Sidwell, who became a more serious threat after he had Charlie's Pub set on fire, and Sonny's daughter, Kristina (Kate Mansi), was inside.

Furthermore, after Jason (Steve Burton) returned from prison in Jakarta, he quit working for Sonny. That left Sonny in a vulnerable position, as it would make it easier for his enemies to kill him without Jason there to protect him. Now, Sonny is preparing to go to war with Drew (Cameron Mathison).

So, with all of these other problems that Sonny's had to deal with lately, why is he suddenly being so nasty to Ava and disregarding their custody agreement? As she told him, a judge won't allow him to ignore the conditions of the agreement just because he feels like it. Many of us love Sonny, but even his fans can agree that he is being bull-headed.

Sonny Advised Michael Not to Turn His Kids Against Willow

When Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) was on trial for Drew's shooting, Sonny cautioned Michael (Rory Gibson) that it wouldn't be in his or his children's best interests if he spoke ill of Willow on the witness stand. After all, she is Wiley (Viron Weaver) and Amelia's mother. By bad-mouthing Willow in court, Michael would make himself look bad in the eyes of his children.

So, why is Sonny now acting antagonistically toward Ava and calling her a murderer when he has murdered many more people than she has? (RIP, Jagger!) Sonny, you're a hypocrite! Let's face it, poor Avery would probably be better off if Michael or Dante raised her, rather than two toxic people who both have backgrounds in organized crime.

This Feud Would Have Made More Sense After Ava Almost Left Sonny to Die

It feels like this custody feud between Sonny and Ava should have taken place last year, when Sonny was struggling with heart problems and collapsed in front of Ava. She stood over him and didn't even bother to pick up his pills, which were lying right there on the carpet after he dropped them. Instead of helping Sonny by giving him his medication or calling 911, Ava merely stood there and taunted him.

Kristina then entered the room and asked Ava why she hadn't helped Sonny. After Ava left and Kristina called Sonny's doctor, Isaiah (Sawandi Wilson), Sonny came to and said it was better that Ava hadn't helped. At the time, he didn't want anyone to know he had a heart problem. He wanted Ava to think he was just having a panic attack.

But that would have been the right time for him to make the custody issue difficult for her, given her refusal to call for help after he collapsed. After all, didn't Ava realize that if Sonny had died, then Avery would have been heartbroken without her father? Ava already made enough mistakes with her older daughter, Kiki (Hayley Erin). So, for Avery's sake, why didn't Ava help Sonny?

Ava Was Happily Living in Sonny's Penthouse in 2024

This storyline from 2024 still feels confusing in many ways. Ava and Sonny were both targets of an unknown shooter, so Sonny let Ava and Avery both move into his apartment to keep them safe. At the time, Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) was running the Pikeman organization and was paying a pharmacist to tamper with Sonny's bipolar medication.

As a result, Sonny's mental state became impaired to the point where he didn't trust most of the members of his own family. Over the next several months, Ava was pretty much the only person he felt comfortable confiding in. She even behaved like his wife, answering the door many times and telling his visitors that he was resting at the moment and couldn't speak to them.

We all started to wonder whether Ava was developing genuine feelings for him. She even visited Nikolas (Adam Huss) in Pentonville and told him how much she loved the fact that Sonny was allowing her into his world. He wasn't treating her like an outsider anymore. She liked the fact that she was the only person he leaned on for support. Many fans thought that Ava and Sonny would have been a great power couple, as they both come from mob backgrounds and they understand each other in ways that no one else can.

Then, Ava did almost the same thing Valentin did, except she paid the pharmacist to replace Sonny's medication with placebos. After all of those months that she finally felt accepted by Sonny, why did she tamper with his medication? Her extreme behavioural change was more than a little confusing. Had she been playing a long con the whole time, hoping that without his medication, he would eventually die, and then she could have Avery all to herself? Again, didn't Ava realize how much it would hurt Avery to lose her father?

We've had too much back and forth between Sonny and Ava over the past two years, and so much of it just hasn't made sense. But if we're being honest, if Ava hadn't tampered with Sonny's or Morgan's (Bryan Craig) medication and if she had never killed Connie Falconeri (Kelly Sullivan), who was Sonny's fiancée at the time, then Ava may very well have been Sonny's perfect match. The powerhouse duo of Maurice Benard and Maura West could have definitely sold the pairing.
