5 Reasons Why General Hospital's Gio May Be the One to Prove Sonny's Innocence

It looks like we may finally be making some headway on General Hospital in regard to the Pentonville beatings that landed Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and Curtis (Donnell Turner) in the hospital. Now that Gio (Giovanni Mazza) is doubting that Sonny (Maurice Benard) is guilty, will he be the one who eventually proves Sonny's innocence? Here are five reasons why we think he will be.

He is the only one who is asking questions

In Tuesday's episode of GH, Gio questioned two different people, expressing doubts that Sonny had anything to do with the beatings. Considering how slowly this storyline has been moving, that's pretty good progress. He asked Curtis whether he thinks there is any chance that Sonny didn't order the beatings. Unfortunately, Curtis always thinks he knows who the guilty party is, only to discover later that he blamed the wrong person. So, it felt like Gio's conversation with him didn't amount to much of anything.

Then, Gio approached Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), who also continued to insist that Sonny was the culprit. GH fans can't wait until everyone is proven wrong, and they hope that Sonny turns his back on all of them when that happens.

Gio pointed out that it would make no sense for Sonny to leave the mob and then turn around and order a prison beating. His loved ones would be disappointed in him. Gio senses that something is off. Furthermore, he knows that Sonny has never lied to him before, so why would he start now?

He may overhear a conversation between Ava and Drew

Soap characters always overhear other people's conversations. This might very well happen to Gio. He could overhear Drew (Cameron Mathison) and Ava (Maura West) discussing their devious scheme to frame Sonny for the beatings.

If that happens, then it wouldn't be the first time Gio overheard one of Sonny's enemies engaged in a conversation that involved him. Last year, Gio overheard Sidwell talking to Jordan at the Jerome Gallery. Sidwell told Jordan that Sonny had planned to send Natalia (Eva La Rue) to Belize right before she was found dead in a hotel room from an overdose of pills and alcohol. Sidwell blamed Sonny for her death and he wanted the investigation left open. Gio immediately told Sonny what he'd overheard, but Sonny advised him to stay out of the war between him and Sidwell, for his own safety.

If history repeats itself and Gio overhears yet another conversation, this time between Drew and Ava, will he be putting himself in possible danger yet again?

Sonny hasn't taken any action yet to prove his innocence

When Sonny visited Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) on Tuesday's GH episode, he told her he was determined to prove his innocence. But the prison beatings took place over a month ago, and since then, he hasn't really done anything to prove it. He hasn't even considered the possibility that Drew and/or Ava could have framed him, even though he knows how much they both hate him.

So, when are we going to see Sonny take an active role in proving his innocence? Last week, he suspected Joss (Eden McCoy) of trying to frame him, and he asked Jason to talk to her on his behalf. Doesn't he realize that ordering a prison beating is not something Joss would do? That's the kind of thing he might have done when he was in the mob, which is why Joss hates him.

So far, we see more of Gio trying to find out the truth than we're seeing of Sonny trying to clear his name. If things continue this way, then just maybe Gio will turn out to be the hero of this storyline.

The PCPD hasn't made any progress investigating the case

No one in the PCPD seems to be investigating this case. Dante continues to be close-minded and won't even consider the possibility that Sonny didn't order the beatings. If he did, then maybe he would investigate the case himself and Gio wouldn't have had to question Curtis, because Dante could have questioned Curtis himself.

Why won't Dante even consider that Sonny could have been framed? After all, Sonny has numerous enemies, and Dante should know better than to believe that one of the attackers would mention Sonny's name. After 20 years of knowing Sonny, it seems that Dante still doesn't know him very well.

Joe will be busy investigating Jack's disappearance

Evidently, Detective Joe Fitzpatrick (Jonathan Bennett) views Ava as a potential suspect in the disappearance of Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna). He asked Dante for permission to investigate the case. Thankfully, we're getting some forward movement on that storyline, since Jack has been buried in the nature preserve for almost two months and we don't even see Outback trying to dig him up anymore. That means Joe likely won't be investigating the case of the Pentonville beatings.

Anna is still receiving therapy for her fragile mental state after her hallucinations of Peter (Wes Ramsey) and the near-shooting of Britt (Kelly Thiebaud). So, we wouldn't be surprised if Gio turns out to be the person who proves Sonny's innocence.

Do you think Gio will get to the truth? Sound off in the comments.
