5 Reasons Why General Hospital's Gio Should Believe Sonny

General Hospital's Sonny (Maurice Benard) is losing more and more loved ones every day. Everyone thinks he ordered the prison beatings that put Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and Curtis (Donnell Turner) in the hospital. It was bad enough that Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) turned against him, but it's hard to believe that even Gio (Giovanni Mazza) thinks Sonny is lying. Here are five reasons why Gio should believe Sonny.

They were close before they even knew they were related

When Gio first appeared in Port Charles, we learned that he had been raised by Lois Cerullo's (Rena Sofer) cousin, Camilla, in Bensonhurst. Camilla's husband, Francis Palmieri, died while serving in Afghanistan. Camilla died when Gio was ten years old, leaving Lois and other family members to step in and take care of him.

Since Sonny also grew up in Bensonhurst and was friends with Lois, he developed a bond with Gio throughout the years. When Gio first arrived in PC, he called him "Uncle Sonny," even though neither was aware of their blood relationship.

It's been over a year since Sonny and Gio learned that they are grandfather and grandson, with Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) and Dante learning that they are Gio's biological parents. Since then, Sonny and Gio's bond has only grown stronger. So, why does Gio seem so certain that Sonny is lying about ordering the prison beatings? It makes no sense that he isn't at least giving himself some time to think it all over.

Sonny gave Gio a place to live, rent-free

Not only is Gio living in Sonny's house, but Sonny hasn't even charged him rent! Tracy (Jane Elliot) never wanted Gio to move in with Sonny, considering that Gio is her great-grandson. She never lets Sonny forget that he killed her nephew, A.J. (Sean Kanan), and that he spent his adult life as a mobster. She warned Gio that Sonny's children are always at risk simply by being in his orbit.

Out of concern for Gio's safety, Tracy wanted him to move out of Sonny's home and into the Quartermaine mansion, but Gio refused to do so. He has always felt at ease living with Sonny, because Sonny doesn't act overprotective, and he doesn't try to tell Gio how to live his life.

Sonny paid for Gio's musical education

Gio loves playing the violin, a skill that he shared with Camilla. Sonny believed in Gio's musical talent long before he ever learned that Gio was his grandson. He paid for Gio's musical education when Gio decided to pursue his gift for playing the violin.

Gio gave an amazing performance at the Nurses' Ball last year, which was the same night that he discovered he was Brook Lynn and Dante's son. In a state of anger and shock, he destroyed his violin onstage.

Even though Gio hasn't resumed playing, he owes Sonny an enormous amount of gratitude. If it weren't for Sonny's financial assistance, Gio wouldn't have been able to receive the musical training that helped him to sharpen his skills as a violinist. He wouldn't have grown up to become the accomplished musician that he is today.

Emma advised Gio not to give up on his family

It was only a few weeks ago that Emma (Braedyn Bruner) gave Gio good advice about dealing with difficult family situations. After Gio learned that Brook Lynn had kept quiet about being the other driver in Curtis and Jordan's (Tanisha Harper) car accident, he was furious.

Emma told him, "Don't take your mother for granted. You shouldn't give up on your family, even when they disappoint you. You work through it."

Not only is Gio ignoring Emma's advice by disbelieving Sonny, he also hasn't even reached out to Brook Lynn to lend her his support. Tracy was concerned about it a couple of weeks ago, and she met with Sonny to ask him for help. Why is Gio turning his back on his mother and his grandfather when they need him more than ever before?

Gio knows what it's like to be criticized harshly by Dante

Why is Gio listening to Dante verbally bash Sonny? He's been down this road himself with Dante more than once, so we would think that he could relate and might feel some empathy for Sonny.

Last year, Rocco (Finn Carr) got drunk and suffered from alcohol poisoning. Dante wouldn't stop blaming Gio, because Gio had let Rocco sleep it off in the boathouse instead of notifying him or Lulu (Alexa Havins) that Rocco had passed out after drinking.

In December 2025, Dante criticized Gio again after Emma and Gio saved the dogs that Professor Henry Dalton (Daniel Goddard) had been performing experiments on. Dante accused Gio of getting Rocco involved, but Rocco really wasn't.

Gio knows from personal experience that Dante can be critical and judgmental, and he jumps to the wrong conclusions at times. Why does he believe what Dante says about Sonny instead of formulating his own opinion and believing Sonny?

It's disappointing, and it makes no sense that Gio, who has always loved Sonny, thinks he is now lying. And because of that, Gio wants to move out of Sonny's house. He should be smarter than this.
