General Hospital’s Drew Cain is in a dramatic turn in his life. Played by Cameron Mathison, Drew was a hero in his early life, before ambition gripped him. From a prudent businessman, Drew turned into a power-crazy politician. Moreover, he wooed his nephew’s wife, destroyed her marriage, and compelled her into a union with him.
However, his new bride, Willow Tait, injected him with drugs and put him in a locked-in syndrome while she took over his office. A shocked Drew now faces the repercussions of his own greed while his wife enjoys perks. Whether this may be his path to salvation remains to be seen.
5 ways Drew may arrive at redemption on General Hospital
1) Jolt from his “locked-in” situation

Drew’s wife, Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), is responsible for his current predicament. While he took her love and commitment for granted, he never caught the signs that she was anguished by his actions. As such, he was completely blindsided when he helped her get exonerated for the shooting incident.
However, Willow admitted to all her crimes against him and her hatred towards him. While Drew is currently incapacitated by the drugs Willow is injecting into him, he possibly realizes how wrong his actions were. Willow’s betrayal will likely push Drew back on his journey towards salvation.
2) Re-evaluating alliance priorities

Before his current state, Drew had broken up with his family and alienated his daughter from all her connections. He joined forces with mobster Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and sleazy politician Ezra Boyle (Daniel Cosgrove), and trusted his wife. However, Willow targeted him with drugs provided by Sidwell.
Since both Willow and Sidwell have confessed their deeds before him, Drew will likely give some thought to his alliances and priorities. He may realize that he trusted the wrong people and try to rescue his soul.
3) Impact of Nina’s guilt

As General Hospital fans witnessed, Nina (Cynthia Watros) was shocked to learn about the true reason for Drew’s “ischemic stroke”. Moreover, Willow tricked her mother into injecting the specific drug into Drew, making her an accomplice.
Recently, Willow entrusted Nina with administering the drug to Drew again. Nina was guilt-ridden and flustered to do the task. She expressed her anguish at having to perform this duty in return for her love and loyalty to her daughter. Having listened to the agony of his former lover, Drew may break the cycle of evil. While he may have deserved what he got at Willow’s hands, Nina’s guilt may push Drew towards redemption over revenge.
4) Realization of Scout’s importance

5) Returning to his former persona

Longtime viewers may remember Drew’s early days in Port Charles after he came out of his brainwashed condition. The ex-Navy SEAL was known for sacrificing himself to help people, including jumping into water to save Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati). That was before ambition and revenge took over his life.
After coming out of his current painful condition, Drew may turn a new leaf. He may return to his original persona, leaving behind his desire for revenge and his ambition for power. If he leaves politics and joins a department of law enforcers, he may put his Navy training to good use.
General Hospital: 5 reasons Drew’s salvation may be impossible
1) Ruthless political ambition

While Drew’s current position has left him physically helpless, his mind is still working, and he may be planning his next move when he comes around. As mentioned before, over the last few years, Drew has undergone a dramatic change in character, from a straightforward businessman and former Navy SEAL to a cutthroat, ambitious politician and a sleazy family member.
His actions involved befriending Sidwell, blackmailing Portia, and wooing Willow. While he has been backstabbed by Sidwell and Willow, whether that has cured Drew’s unbridled thirst for power remains to be seen. He may come out of his situation only to get back in his quest for supremacy.
2) Desire to avenge his fall

As longtime General Hospital fans know, Drew was jealous of his twin, Jason (Steve Morgan), for receiving love from the Quartermaine family, despite Jason being a henchman. At the same time, he never reached that level of acceptance and recognition. Soon, the Quartermaines cut him off after his affair with Willow was revealed. As mentioned before, Drew’s downfall started with his desire to hold power over others. On the one hand, he wanted to hold a political position; on the other, he wanted revenge against the Quartermaine family.
When Drew comes out of his predicament, he may resume his incomplete revenge arc. Along with the Quartermaine family, Jason and Sonny, he will need to avenge his torture from Willow and Sidwell. He may end up with a long list of enemies in his quest.
3) Lack of compassion shows twisted psyche

Drew will not turn to the path of redemption if his psyche is too far twisted. The last couple of months showed the extent of his deterioration. In his drive for control and power, Drew showed apathy towards his former friends.
In his bid to destroy Curtis (Donnelle Turner), Drew blackmailed his wife and joined hands with Sidwell to bring down Sonny (Maurice Benard). Viewers also witnessed him leaving Ned (Wally Kurth) with chest pain, showing no compassion. Whether Drew will be ready to put in more effort to overcome such insensitivity remains to be seen.
4) Betraying family connections

In his better days, Drew was known for his loyalty to friends and his family. However, over the last few years, he transformed into a vengeful person who turned on his own family, the Quartermaines. From trying to drag Tracy (Jane Elliot) through legal trouble to leaving Ned to suffer a heart attack alone, Drew has betrayed his family many times.
His betrayal led him to woo his nephew’s wife and become passionate with her in the Quartermaine nursery. With so many nasty actions behind him, Drew may not find it easy to turn a new leaf. His friction with his family may not evaporate when he comes out of his locked-in condition.
5) Cruelty towards children sealed his downfall

Drew Cain showed his dark side when he targeted Wiley in trying to take down Michael. He was insensitive towards the child’s psyche when he let Wiley believe that Michael did not love him or want him. This underhanded move on a child to win his war showed the evil twist in Drew’s persona.
To add to this, he has been a negligent father to his daughter since his romance with Willow started. He strove to cut Scout off from her half-brother and other relationships, leaving the child lonely. Since the real test of a person’s character is their behavior with children, whether Drew’s redemption can overcome this level of disgrace remains to be seen.
