For years, Sonny has protected Port Charles from outside mobsters, while also committing numberous crimes and protecting his family. His unexpected decision to retire from the mob may surprise many, especially his ex-wife, Carly.

Since she is Sonny’s former wife, a close friend and has been part of his crime world in the past, she has seen peril and violence up close. Although she tried to walk away herself, her friendship and connection with Sonny kept her close to danger. With Sonny exiting the crime world, Carly can heave a sigh of relief and put all the bloodshed and brutality behind her.

2) Safer environment for her children and grandchildren

Carly will be even more relieved for her family. She and Sonny are parents to little Donna (Scarlett Spears), while she is the grandmother of Wiley (Viron Weaver) and Amelia (Sienna Goerisch). A mob connection keeps the youngsters under constant threat of rival gangs.

With Sonny walking away, the little ones will be free of the shadow of fear from mob clashes. The same applies to Carly’s grown children, Michael (Rory Gibson) and Josslyn (Eden McCoy). Carly lost her son, Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig) to car bomb explosion, although not meant for or set by Sonny. Now Carly may feel relaxed about not losing any more family members to the crime world.

3) Hazard free lives for all the three friends

Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), who was Sonny’s hitman for decades, stepped away from his employment after his traumatic experience during his recent WSB imprisonment. While Jason's career plans are unclear as of yet, he took the drastic step to be there for his son. Following Jason’s decision, Sonny also planned to retire from the mob. Moreover, he made plans to run legal businesses and is looking for assets and properties around the town.

In the past, Carly has joined Jason and Sonny in some of their criminal escapades. Now all three friends will be leading new lives and choosing risk-free careers to suit themselves. They do not need to belong to different groups with law enforcers chasing them.

4) Reclaiming her identity through legitimate assets

With such close ties to crime lord Sonny, Carly has found her own businesses and assets investigated by the feds. Despite running her own legit businesses, a large part of her mental space was taken up by Sonny’s crime world.

With Sonny leaving the mob, Carly can focus on her own things. She can have local alliances with no anxiety and can even run joint businesses with Sonny without the fear of her assets being frozen. Moreover, Carly can now make a different image for herself by getting involved with charities, local politics or the high society.

5) Mending differences with Josslyn over Sonny

Over the last few years, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) has grown weary mother’s association with Sonny. She considers Sonny the root cause of Carly’s problems. Joss has tried hard to shed her own family connection with the mob and is currently working as a WSB agent. One of her chief goals for this move was to free Port Charles of Sonny’s criminal presence.

With Sonny choosing a civilian life, Josslyn loses the reason to hate him. As such, Carly may hope that there will be peace between Joss and Sonny. With that, she may be able to continue her relationship without any judgement from her daughter. Without the shadow of the Corinthos syndicate looming over them, the mother-daughter team can rebuild their relationship.
