In one of the most stunning General Hospital twists in more than three decades, longtime Port Charles mob boss, Sonny Corinthos, has announced his retirement.

While Sonny had been toying with the idea of walking away from the mob world last year when he had heart troubles, the arrest of mobster rival, Jenz Sidwell, and Jason leaving also walking away horrifying Jakarta experience, triggered Sonny’s new future.

Instead of continuing to work as a crime lord after Sidwell’s arrest or hiring another hitman to replace Jason, Sonny planned to step back. As Dante pointed out, this may leave him open to revenge attacks by former enemies. However, his decision may affect many more lives than just his own.

6 GH Characters Impacted by Sonny’s Decision

1) Carly stripped of protective insulation

For years GH fans have seen Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) playing the benevolent mob boss of Port Charles, supporting his family and friends. One of them has been his former wife, business partner, and close friend, Carly Spencer (Laura Wright). The two are parents to little Donna while Sonny is the adoptive father of Carly’s son, Michael Corinthos (now played by Rory Gibson).

So far, Sonny’s connection has been the basis for Carly’s protection from enemies. She even headed Sonny’s businessfor some time. Although not part of the mob world anymore, Carly depends on Sonny’s powers to keep her safe. With Sonny moving away from the crime world, Carly may remain exposed to mob attacks alongside Sonny.

2) Michael forced to rethink his future

Michael was adopted by Sonny after his mother, Carly, fled the Quartermaine family and kept him away from AJ. Since young, Michael has been close to Sonny even though he had differences about the latter’s mob connections. However, he knew that his father would come to his rescue whenever needed.

While Michael doesn't work in the mob world, he has enjoyed his adoptive father’s support, advice, and backing. With Sonny ready to walk away from the mob culture, Michael may find himself vulnerable. On one hand, he can associate with Sonny in legal and clean businesses, while on the other, he may think about being the heir of Corinthos Coffee. With Michael busy arranging for his upcoming custody battle, Sonny’s decision would leave his future plans in a flux.

3) Brick’s loss of primary client

As longtime GH fans know, Brick (Stephen A Smith) has been an all-purpose aide for Sonny, particularly when international operators and situations need to be handled. Whether it is saving Sonny from getting killed at the hospital or getting intel on Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) to dissuade Carly from dating him, Brick has been there whenever Sonny needed him.

Sonny, with his illegal business, happens to be Brick’s biggest client. When the mob boss moves to more legal businesses, Brick’s services may not be needed. As such, the long work-association may come to an end, as may Brick’s occasional visits to Port Charles.

4) Nina forsaken without backup support

GH viewers have seen Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) rush to Sonny for help over the years. While their romance and marriage were short-lived, Nina continued to be in contact with Sonny. The connection remained since Nina’s biological daughter, Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) was married to Sonny’s adoptive son, Michael.

Moreover, Nina’s unscrupulous actions inadvertently land her in trouble, she occasionally asks Sonny to step in and save her back. With Sonny planning to become a civilian with no powers in his hands, Nina will have no one to turn to in treacherous situations.

5) Laura left to protect the town alone

Mayor Laura Collins (Genie Francis) are the best of friends and have been for years. While Laura knows Sonny’s benevolent side, their enemies have tried to capitalize on this by tainting the mayor-mobster friendship.

Recent events found mobster Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) trying to frame the mayor by planting a dead body in her car. However, Sonny helped dispose of the body, saving the mayor.

They also collaborated with Lucas Jones (Van Hansis) in stealing the incriminating evidence and getting the mobster arrested. However, with Sonny leaving the mob, Laura will lack his influences in keeping enemies at bay. While Sonny will remain her friend and the town’s benefactor, he may not have the power to tackle unpleasant and illegal issues.

6) Sonny’s equation with Tracy changes

There is no love lost between Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) and Sonny due to his treatment of Jason and AJ. While she was forced to collaborate with him to save Deception from going bankrupt, Tracy actively offered help to Sidwell in taking down Sonny. Recently, she congratulated her nephew and Sonny’s longtime henchman, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) for walking away from a life of crime.

When Tracy learns that Sonny gave up his illegal businesses and distanced himself from the crime world, she may be pleasantly surprised. Since part of her dislike for Sonny was related to the latter’s mob connections, she may consider thawing towards the former mobster. Whether she trusts Sonny and associates with him as equals remains to be seen.
