On General Hospital, Gio Palmieri’s musical career has retaken the spotlight after he and girlfriend Emma Scorpio-Drake went to New York City to see Aladdin on Broadway. Gio revealed to Emma that he had spent time playing in the orchestra on a Broadway show in the past. But there was more to Gio's trip to New York than GH!

Starring on Broadway and on the court

In real life, Giovanni Mazza is an accomplished violinist like his character. Before his Aladdin adventures aired last week, Mazza got more time in the spotlight during the National Basketball Association playoffs.

Mazza performed the violin at halftime of the Los Angeles Lakers home playoff game at Staples Center against the Atlanta Hawks on April 21. His show paid tribute to Michael Jackson in concert with a theatrical movie named Michael about the pop superstar’s life that debuted in theaters this week. Mazza wore a Lakers ballcap and a LeBron James jersey. He shared a clip of playing the Michael Jackson hit “Smooth Criminal” as part of the performance.

Mazza has performed at Lakers games for years and at other sporting events. He has shared clips of many of his performances on his YouTube channel, which are in the same style as his memorable performance at the 2025 General Hospital Nurses Ball, where he played a medley of well-known songs.

Mazza’s TV family weighed in with their excitement. Dominic Zamprogna, who plays Gio’s father Dante Falconeri, exclaimed “My son!!” with a heart emoji. Rena Sofer, Gio’s grandma, Lois Cerullo said, “My boy!!! My amazing TV grandson!!!!!” Bruner said, “You are the coolest person I know.” Mazza replied, “no YOU are!”

General Hospital stars love Mazza's music

Several other GH costars commented with congrats and lots of emojis, including Kelly Thiebaud (Britt Westbourne), Katelyn MacMullen (Willow Cain), Nazneen Contractor (Justine Turner), Laura Wright (Carly), and Jen Ray (Suzanne). Jonathan Bennett, who will debut as a character named Joe Fitzpatrick in the near future, commented, “Legend.”

The Instagram user randonnessandall suggested, “A duet with Lindsey Stirling is needed,” referencing a violin star who has recorded and performed with several well-known singers. The user jillymo527 added, “OMG, you are so awesome and talented! What an audience you had. Wow! I love how you move with the music. I hope GH lets you play violin again. I love it!!”

Mazza and Bruner shared pictures from the performance on their Instagram Stories, as did official accounts for the Lakers.

On GH, Gio and Emma spent time with Aladdin star Michael James Scott, who in Port Charles lore is a friend of Gio’s. Scott, who plays The Genie in the production, is scheduled to come to Port Charles and appear on GH again in the near future after Gio invited him to perform at The Savoy.

Mazza, Bruner, and the GH showrunners have shared plenty of pictures from the crossover event, which not only advertises a Disney production but gives a nod to the past adventures of Gio’s Port Charles family. Their time in New York City is reminiscent of when Gio’s grandparents, Ned (Wally Kurth) and Lois (Rena Sofer) spent their honeymoon at Coney Island in 1994.

General Hospital posted a video, which you can see below, sharing the adventures they had in the city that never sleeps. The video showed Mazza and Bruner having fun on the plane to New York, then enjoying all the sights of the city. They walked around Times Square, had bagel sandwiches, and spent time at the iconic Museum of Modern Art.
