General Hospital and Days of Our Lives star Wally Kurth recently had a chance to reminisce about one of his biggest and most important TV performances. Kurth and several other soap stars performed music on an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1992 to promote an album whose sale proceeds helped fight child abuse in the United States and Canada.
Kurth performed a song on his own and also led a group performance of an anthem called “The Eyes of a Child.”
A soap star musical memory extravaganza

According to a Los Angeles Times article at the time, the song included 38 daytime soap opera stars in the style of “We Are the World," with solos and duets by a dozen actors before building to the full chorus.
Eight of the stars appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to perform the anthem, which is preserved on YouTube. Kurth shared a microphone with Michael Damian (Danny Romalotti, The Young and the Restless), who was already a well-known musical sensation thanks to his “Rock On.”
The performance also featured Melissa Reeves (Jennifer Deveraux, DAYS) with her real-life husband Scott Reeves (ex-Steven Webber, GH) and on-screen husband Matthew Ashford (Jack Deveraux, DAYS). You could also hear former Y&R stars Victoria Rowell (Drucilla Winters) and Brenda Epperson (Ashley Abbott). Also notable was a performance from Rick Hearst, who at the time played Alan-Michael Spaulding on Guiding Light, and now plays Ric Lansing on GH.
General Hospital's Wally Kurth relives the moment
The Instagram account "Fans of Wally Kurth," which regularly shares clips of Kurth singing, showed part of this performance on its page. Kurth commented on the post, “That was a thrill at the time. Performing on Oprah.”
Kurth also performed the song “Leave It Alone,” with him taking the lead on guitar and his seven fellow soap stars on stage clapping along. A video of the performance on YouTube shows Oprah clapping along with Kurth and enjoying herself.
Several fans praised the performance. On Instagram, liz_exdel said, “You have a beautiful voice!” The fan sammibabe 2 added, “I recorded this from the show at the time then taped it onto a mix tape with other songs from my dool collection. I later on got the cd.”
Both songs were featured on the album “With Love, from the Soaps.”
Proceeds from the album at the time benefited Child Welfare League of America Inc. and the Children’s Aid Society Foundation in Canada, which supported welfare agencies on behalf of abused, neglected, homeless and otherwise troubled children.
The album is still available on Spotify and other streaming services, and the CD is still available on Amazon for soap fans wanting to hear some long-lost favorites. In addition to Kurth, the album features solo songs from Damian, Ashford, Hearst, and Scott Reeves, as well as Gloria Loring (ex-Liz Chandler, DAYS), Brad Maule (ex-Tony Jones, GH), Jeff Trachta (ex-Thorne Forrester, The Bold and the Beautiful), and the late Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters, Y&R).
