On General Hospital, the back-from-the-dead Nathan West is about to get stuck in a blizzard along with the rest of Port Charles.

When he isn’t playing the General Hospital detective, Ryan Paevey has been making a film in the opposite climate of winter-worn upstate New York.

Paevey recently spent a week in Barbados making a film on the beaches of the Caribbean island. He has been posting content about the film on his Instagram account.

General Hospital's Detective West loves adventures in real life, too

Recently, Paevey shared a video on his YouTube channel, which you can see below, giving a long behind-the-scenes look (more than 21 minutes) at his efforts to make the film on the island. He didn’t say what the film is about, but surfing and the water are involved as he shared the adventures he had with two of his friends in Barbados.

The most poetic part of the video came when the General Hospital star and one of his friends explored a cave on the island, a scene he previously showed a clip of on his Instagram account. He walks around in awe of the beauty he is seeing in nature, and he waxes poetic about being a “fortunate wanderer.”

“That’s got to be one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen,” he said. “You don’t know how long something like this is going to be around. Just imagine what it took and how long it took nature to make a space like this, so we could be welcome in it right now, just like this.

“There’s a strange feeling you experience exploring places like this. Almost a restlessness where you don’t know whether to stay and enjoy the view that you have, or go look for another. Every time you move, there’s something to see. You just know there’s more.”

The YouTube video is part of a series connected to his “Fortunate Wanderer” brand. Paevey sells jewelry and other merchandise on the site, which has a brand logo. He is currently making a wedding ring for General Hospital castmate Rory Gibson (Michael Corinthos).

The brand has a philosophy, exploring the idea of exploration and finding adventure. As Paevey describes on its website, “A video series about breaking free from the daily grind and chasing adventure together. From surfing to motorcycles, travel, jewelry making, and unforgettable food, it’s about living wildly, creatively, and without limits.”

The YouTube video about Barbados expands on clips the General Hospital star has shown on his Instagram account in recent weeks. It also shows the hard work that goes into making a film.

Part of the video showed the difficulty Paevey and his friends had flying to Barbados. They had trouble getting several of their surfboards to the island. Paevey showed the painstaking process he had to do to pack the surfboards so they would be safe on the plane, wrapping them in a lot of foam and padding.

Not only was their original flight delayed, but the airline would only let one surfboard bag on the flight. So one of the friends had to stay behind and get the other surfboards on a later flight.

Once they finally got there, Paevey shared scenes from their hotel on the beach, and the beautiful scenery of the ocean. He also shared a clip of him wearing an eye patch, a literal pirate of the Caribbean.

Numerous fans commented on the Instagram post promoting the video. Several commented that they loved seeing the tropical imagery, a contrast from the cold and snow back home.

The Instagram user terrilee007 said, “Hey Ryan. I’m glad you’re having a great time. I’m glad you haven’t changed since you went back on GH. You’re so down to earth and awesome. We all love you so much.”

The fan Debbie_hodges1 agrees with the General Hospital actor's philosophy on life: “Simply amazing video. Thank you for sharing and showing a part of your life with others. Nothing in life is worth it without doing it with the ones we love and care about.. Enjoy and live every moment to its (fullest).”
