Sarah Joy Brown originated Carly on General Hospital in 1996, winning an impressive three Daytime Emmys during her stay in Port Charles. Years later, she returned as Claudia Zacchara and reminded everyone she could stir chaos from any angle. Brown never relied on one role to define her. This week, she turned the focus outward, spotlighting the next generation instead.

General Hospital icon supports a rising talent

Brown wrote on Instagram, “Fun night with my baby niece @hlyp.michelle at a SAG screening of Marty Supreme with Q & A by Timothee Chalamet. Great film with wonderfully nuanced performances. She was mesmerized, we loved it. Throughout this awards season, so many of the actors who do Q&As following their films mention the background artist, and I find that truly heartwarming!”

Brown finished up with, “She’s paying her dues & wants to follow in her auntie’s footsteps.” The photos she attached told the rest. In one, Brown sat in a car, wearing a bold red coat, hair loose, the camera catching that unmistakable Carly intensity, softened by pride. In the others, she leaned in beside her niece for close selfies, both glowing under low theater light, cheeks nearly touching, the red coat popping against the dark.

Brown made it clear this was not just a glamorous night out. Her niece worked in the background for nearly a year, clocking in long days, chasing a SAG card, and learned the rhythm of a set from the edges inward. (Check out Brown’s reunion with Maurice Benard (Sonny).)

The comment section lit up fast. @awesomewes82 wrote, “The OG Carley [is] a true icon in television history.” @marqjwatts added, “Wow, cool, and she looks like you and your daughter. I'm glad you all had a good time, and may she succeed.”

@pina_fata shared, “Happy for ur niece! I’m pretty sure she’s got the best mentor! I know you’ll keep doing good by her. You look great xoxo.” And @hlyp.michelle herself chimed in with, “Such a good time.”

Others focused on Brown’s red coat moment. @castle_in_disguise wrote, “Hey Sarah! You look ravishing in red.” @wildwasthe_wind added, “Pretty in red. Both look Fab!!!”

Through it all, one thing stood out. Brown was not putting herself into the spotlight. She cheered from the front row, proud aunt, seasoned pro, watching someone else fall in love with the work the same way she once did. (Find out how Brown paid tribute to Anthony Geary.)

General Hospital is available on ABC and Hulu.
