General Hospital took Drew Cain from a hero we "loved to love" to a villain whom we "love to hate." Cameron Mathison, Drew’s portrayer, has done a fantastic job, bringing new colors to Jason’s twin. Now, the reasons that Drew changed so much are coming to light! He’s Not Bad, He Was Just “Drew” This WayWillow and Drew | Image: ABCGH co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten told Soap Opera Digest how Drew’s journey from good guy to cad came about. “I think there are a number of things that played into it,” Van Etten said. He pointed out that the Quartermaine family, the clan that Drew’s a member of, thrives on conflict, given the volatile nature of the family’s members.Once AJ (Sean Kanan, now Deacon, The Bold and the Beautiful) was killed off and Tracy (Jane Elliot) shifted into the role of family matriarch, the “black sheep” position of the Q clan was open.To Van Etten, Drew, a newcomer, seemed best poised to take over the part of family antagonist. “The Quartermaines needed an AJ,” Korte added. “They needed an Alan [the late Stuart Damon].”Alan, of course, had his villainous days. He attempted to kill his wife, Monica (Leslie Charleson), and her lover, Rick Webber (Chris Robinson), not once but twice. He rigged the Quartermaine roof to collapse on Rick and Monica, but Alan had second thoughts at the last minute. All three were victims of the roof caving in, but Alan pushed Rick and Monica to safety, saving their lives. Also, Alan tried to shoot the lovebirds when they were in Rick's room at Kelly's Diner (now, Bobbie's Diner). An explosion, however, prevented Alan from going through with his murderous scheme. Drew Did a Bad, Bad Thing View this post on Instagram Instagram PostDrew’s affair with Michael’s (Rory Gibson) wife, Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) cemented Drew’s role as villain. (Mind you, many Port Charles citizens have committed murder and done other heinous acts, but Drew’s sleeping with his nephew’s wife somehow tops the charts!)Willow finally saw through Drew’s façade, which led to her pumping him with lead – not once, but twice! Willow went on trial for the shooting but was found not guilty. Drew’s done far worse than help Willow commit adultery. He’s framed Willow’s mother, Nina (Daytime Emmy-winner Cynthia Watros), for the disappearance of Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna), and he has partnered with morally-challenged Ava Jerome (Maura West). The two have framed Sonny (Maurice Benard) for Curtis (Donnell Turner) and Sidwell (Carlo Rota) being beaten up at Pentonville. Sonny is guilty of many things, but he's innocent of hiring thugs to beat up Curtis and Sidwell.Mathison, beloved for decades as good guy Ryan Lavery on All My Children, has achieved quite a feat. He’s embraced Drew’s dark side and is the man many GH fans love to hate!Do you like Drew as a villain on GH? Aren’t there other characters who’ve done far worse things in Port Charles than he has?
