General Hospital's Ross Cullum spent last week doing what Cullum does best: manipulating, threatening, and pulling strings. Then came the hard stop. Rocco stepped in, pulled the trigger, and suddenly the most dangerous man in the room wasn’t standing anymore. Off-screen, Andrew Hawkes wasn’t leaning into any of that menace. In a recent video, he peeled all of it back and revealed something much softer, and even a bit disarming.

General Hospital villain, real-life goofball

Hawkes shared a video in which he is asked what would surprise people about him, he didn’t hesitate. “That I’ve been married for 22 years almost, that I have two kids,” he said, before adding, “I have a 10-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl.” Then he undercut any lingering intimidation factor with, “That I’m a total goofball.”

The conversation drifted to his dog, and that’s where the edges really softened. “Our dog is Stella… she’s a year old… a husky chocolate lab mix,” he said, explaining they got her after losing their previous dog. “The house was empty… we need to get a dog.” Then came Blue. “I guarantee you’ve never seen a dog who looks like this… he was the most awesomest, handsomest boy.” It came across as sheer honesty.

Fans picked up on that immediately. @bibif59 wrote, “I disliked Cullum so much, but watching this video put a smile on my face. From now on, when I see Cullum, I will smile.” @really_n_truly added, “Definitely gave your character a break bcuz Cullum is so mean and scary.” And @cajuninexile didn’t hold back, calling him “a villain as terrifying as Cullum.”

Fans can’t unsee the real Hawkes now

There’s always a moment when a villain slips, not on screen, but in the audience’s head. Hawkes may have just triggered it. @rtkacz09 pointed out, “OMG what a transformation you pull off on GH!!!! … Great acting,” while @amymarcs called him “a Brilliant actor, and an incredible human being.” That split between character and person suddenly became impossible to ignore.

Then the emotional thread took over. @nik42087 admitted, “Made me cry when he talked about blue boy,” and @tricolortailswithfinn wrote that hearing him talk about his dog “tells me all I need to know about you as a human being.” That’s not about performance anymore, but connection.

And maybe the most telling reaction came from @brigknitter: “This clip made me like Cullum. I can’t unsee this.” That’s the risk and the magic of it. Hawkes spent months building a character people love to hate. Then, in a couple of minutes, he rewired the whole thing with a peek into his real life.
