General Hospital character James West has spent his share of time in hospitals, given his mom being in a coma and other assorted stories. Now, his portrayer, Gary James Fuller, is sharing news of his own real-life trip to the hospital!

General Hospital, life imitating art

"So…I pulled a 'James,' 😬," began a post on Fuller's Instagram account, which shows the young man in a hospital gown holding onto a medical device!

"If you watch General Hospital, you know James has spent his fair share of time in the ER. Apparently, I decided that playing him wasn’t enough—I had to try it myself," the actor continued. "What started as a ride on my mini bike turned into a trip to the trauma center, two surgeries, and almost a week in the hospital. Definitely not how I planned to spend my week."

Fortunately, Fuller is on the mend! "The good news is that I’m doing well and getting stronger every day," he says. "The doctors, nurses, and hospital staff took amazing care of me, and I’m really thankful for everyone who helped and everyone who sent messages, prayers, and support.

"One thing I learned is that hospital food isn’t great, but the nurses are awesome. 😆 Even though it hurt and some parts were pretty scary, I tried to keep smiling and stay positive," he maintains. "There wasn’t much I could do except be brave, crack a few jokes, and focus on getting better.

"One of the coolest parts of all of this was seeing how many people were rooting for me," he adds. "My General Hospital family checked in with FaceTime calls, messages, and encouragement. I got so much love from my castmates, casting, wardrobe, my studio teachers, agents, manager, and so many people behind the scenes. It meant a lot to know I had such a big team cheering me on while I recovered."

Now, Fuller has checked out of the real-life hospital. "I'm home now," he says, "healing up, and already looking forward to getting back to baseball, racing, filming, and all the things I love to do.

"But just so everyone knows…from now on," Fuller concludes. "I’m going to let James handle the ER storylines. ❤️."

No word yet on how this might affect what viewers see on screen or if Fuller's real-life injuries will need to be written into the show.

One thing we do now is that James may be headed for heartbreak should he ever discover that "Nathan," his father, isn't really his dad after all, and that the man posing as Nathan is James' uncle, Nathan's twin, Cassius, played by Ryan Paevey.

Cassius has expressed a desire for James not to learn the truth so that he doesn't have to lose a father a second time. However, secrets have a way of coming out! Stay tuned to see what happens!
