General Hospital star Genie Francis is getting the Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday night at the Daytime Emmys. Now, she’s reflecting on her illustrious career, her life in Port Charles, and her late leading man, Anthony Geary (ex-Luke).Something Extra SpecialFrancis sat down with Extra host Derek Hough (Dancing With the Stars) to talk about her career and Friday’s big night. Her husband, Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation), is going to present her with the accolade, which is going to give the GH legend an extra sense of security.“Like Tony, it feels incredibly safe, and it takes [care of] a lot of my nerves,” Francis told Hough of being near her husband. “I know he’s another one who’s just not going to let me screw up,” she chuckled.Francis joined GH when she was a teenager in 1977, making her debut on February 8 of that year. The following year, Francis was shot into a front-burner storyline, which played no small role in propelling GH from the bottom of the ratings to the top.Laura’s romance with Scotty (Kin Shriner) was derailed by Bobbie Spencer (the late Jacklyn Zeman). Then, Laura was seduced by an older man, David Hamilton (the late Jerry Ayres), as part of his revenge plan against her stepdad, Rick (Michael Gregory; the late Chris Robinson).Laura’s accidental killing of David and the subsequent murder trial in which her mother, Dr. Lesley Webber (the late Denise Alexander), went to jail, grabbed a younger audience for GH, and the show was never the same!“I’ve never really gotten my impact,” Francis humbly said. “I just don’t get it.”Of course, millions of GH fans do. In fact, there’s a hashtag on social media that reads #GenieIsGH, signifying the important role the actress has with the show.Think of Luke...and LauraAnthony Geary and Genie Francis | Image: ABC, ExtraFrancis chatted about the loss of her late former leading man, Anthony Geary (ex-Luke), who joined the show in late 1978. The subsequent pairing of Luke and Laura climaxed in 1981 with a wedding that attracted 30 million viewers.Earlier this year, GH wrote an episode in which Luke’s loved ones remembered him. While Luke had been killed off a few years earlier, GH wrote the special episode after Geary passed away in real life. Francis delivered a tour de force as Laura sat alone in a church and thanked her late, former husband for “the dance.”The actress said that as long as she was in Geary’s arms, she could do it. “I’d like to thank my wonderful partner, Tony Geary, for his talent,” Francis said in her 2007 Daytime Emmy acceptance speech when she won the statuette for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.Francis carries memories of Geary with her that bring a smile to her face, and that’s not all. “I wear Tony Geary’s cologne,” she revealed. Francis recalled hugging Geary one time and smelling him. “Oh, it smells so good, and he told me what [his cologne was] and he said, ‘It’s unisex.’”Hough playfully suggested that he could pop onto GH and play another long-lost son of Laura’s. “Absolutely,” Francis graciously responded, noting that Hough looks like he could be Laura’s offspring.Don’t miss The Daytime Emmys on Friday, October 30, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on YouTube, and you can stream the ceremony on the Emmys app.Click here for a list of nominees for the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmys!
