General Hospital characters Sonny and Jason have both quit the mob after decades of their involvement in underworld activities. The mob has been part of the GH canvas since the late 1970s, at least! Can Port Charles survive without the mob backdrop? Maurice Benard is speaking out on the story development! Changing CourseAt least one GH devotee, @JCassadine7, is guarded about the seismic shift of both Jason (Steve Burton) and Sonny (Maurice Benard) leaving the mob. "To all the #GH fans that hate the mob or Sonny and Jason’s place in it, be careful what you wish for," @JCassadine7 posted, "if it exits completely, we are dealing with just another ordinary boring soap like #YR, and isn’t that the last thing we want regardless of who you root for?" Benard responded to the poster, letting social media know that there's nothing to be concerned about in the process. "There’s nothing wrong with doing another profession or change," Benard posted, "as long as both characters still have power. And that is the plan. Tracy (Jane Elliot) was opposed to Sonny being added to the board, as he had killed AJ (Sean), the son of Monica and Alan, two beloved doctors who served as chief of staff throughout their careers. Might Sonny be headed to more medical storylines? Jason, too? The character was going to become a doctor at one point. We're not sure we can see Jason wearing a white lab coat after all these years of black t-shirts and leather jackets, but anything is possible. Sonny may keep his lucrative coffee import business, Corinthos Coffee, going. Well, here's hoping it has been lucrative all these years!Money could end up being the least of Jason and Sonny's worries as they try to break free from a life of crime. How will the other crime families respond to Sonny and Jason wanting out of the business? Will it be that easy to extricate themselves from that world? At least one GH devotee is looking forward to life after the mob for Sonny and Jason. "I have been watching the show for over 40 years, and the Alzheimer’s story was my all-time favorite," posted @dimplelover of the tale that told the story of Sonny, Carly (Laura Wright), and the whole family coming together after Mike (Max Gail) was diagnosed with the crippling memory condition. Both Benard and Gail won Daytime Emmys for their performances in that poignant tale. "I am all for a change because the mob stories are not going anywhere these days.
