British photographer Martin Parr passed away at the age of 73. Parr died at his home in Bristol on Saturday, according to the director of the Martin Parr Foundation, Jenni Smith.

According to the statement released by the foundation, the following sentiments were shared.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Martin Parr died yesterday at home in Bristol. He is survived by his wife Susie, his daughter Ellen, his sister Vivien and his grandson George. The family asks for privacy at this time. The Martin Parr Foundation and Magnum Photos will work together to preserve and share Martin’s legacy. More information on this will follow in due course. Martin will be greatly missed.”

Martin, born in Surrey in 1952, rose to fame in the 1980s with his documentary, The Last Resort, where he studied working-class people on holiday in New Brighton, Merseyside.

He had a knack for making the mundane look lively and captured the smallest details of everyday life. Last month, he expressed that the world needs his satirical, playful imagery now more than ever. In the interview with AFP, he said,

"The state we're all in is appalling. We're all too rich. We're consuming all these things in the world. And we can't. It's unsustainable."

Photographer Diane Smyth, editor of the British Journal of Photography, expressed,

"He was a hoot - always up for a call, especially if it was very early, and always very direct. He did he own thing, worked incredibly hard, helped others along the way - a life well-lived."

In 2014, he started his foundation. The foundation housed his own photo archives as well as his collection of Irish and British photography from other artists he admired.

He once said, “You have to be fearless if you’re to be a photographer. There’s no time for being intimidated.”
