A K-Pop tribute concert in Belfast has gone viral on TikTok after hundreds of attendees expressed outrage, saying the event felt more tied to Netflix's K-Pop Demon Hunters than the music genre itself.

Thousands of young fans and their parents attended the sold-out K-Pop tribute show, K-Pop Forever! Tribute, at the SSE Arena, with some even dressed up as their favorite K-Pop Demon Hunters characters, only to realize that the event wasn't exactly about the Netflix movie at all.

Following the fiasco, social media lit up with various reactions, with people citing miscommunication as the cause of this ordeal at the K-Pop tribute event, while some blamed the parents for their lack of knowledge about the genre.

"i'm crying did they think kpop was the name of a character or something," one wrote on X/Twitter.
"it didn't say demon hunters anywhere. that's the parents fault for not doing research on where they're taking their kids…" another shared.
"with that poster.. what were they expecting?" an online user tweeted.
"Sounds like a clear marketing mix-up. If fans expected a Netflix 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' event but got a general K-pop tribute instead, frustration is understandable. Clear promotion could have prevented this backlash," one commented.
"Expectation vs reality hits hard," an internet user posted.
"The poster looks like it was made with AI, at this point I can't feel sorry for anyone who falls for any advertisement made with AI, if you are an adult you should research the type of event you are going to attend before buying a ticket," another replied.
"Parents really stupid enough to not even read that the tribute event is about the genre and not specifically demon hunters," a fan stated.

SSE Arena issues statement on K-Pop tribute concert fiasco

Per Ticketmaster, the K-Pop tribute event is an "all-action concert" and will feature smash hits by BLACKPINK, BTS, TWICE, and K‑Pop Demon Hunters, such as Soda Pop and Golden.

However, angry parents blasted the concert afterward as their children went home disappointed. Some also criticized the promotion of the K-Pop tribute show, saying it didn't reflect what the actual event was about, and slammed the sound quality and some of the "adult" costumes used.

Steven Hunter, who attended the concert with his 10-year-old daughter as his Christmas gift to her, complained through The Irish News about the recent debacle. He shared that his heart "broke for her" when she didn't enjoy the K-Pop tribute event.

"We knew we were going to a tribute show for the genre, so we understood there would be songs that were unknown to us. Overall, the show was a shambles, from poor sound quality, microphones cutting in and out throughout the show."

He continued:

"It actually took me 20-30 minutes into the main act to realise it was the main act. Then the statement SSE and Aiken put out saying the majority 'enjoyed the show,' I don’t know what show they are referring to but it certainly wasn’t the one I was attending."

According to Hunter, the crowd began shrinking about 20 minutes into the concert.

"People were getting up and leaving 20 minutes into the show. My heart broke for my daughter and the hundreds of others that went through it unfortunately."

Another parent, Laura Matthews, also expressed her grievances about the fiasco. She attended the K-Pop tribute show with her children, but claimed that the show was "inappropriate." She also echoed Hunter's sentiments, saying that most families left halfway through.

"I attended last night’s event in the SSE and feel disheartened. I think the majority of people complained or left. The show was inappropriate for kids, regardless of the songs, I didn't appreciate music with swearing words, and dancing provocatively on stage to an arena filled with kids. My daughter wanted to leave as soon as it started."

SSE Arena has since issued a statement regarding the incident. On Facebook, they wrote:

"We are aware of some feedback received following the K-Pop Forever Tribute show this evening at The SSE Arena, Belfast. The show played in Belfast tonight as part of a world tour, and the content, design, and choreography has been built to represent the full K-Pop genre, featuring songs from BTS, Blackpink, and Katseye, as well as eight hits from K-pop Demon Hunters, including 'Golden,' 'Takedown,' and 'Soda Pop.'"

The statement went on:

"Whilst the majority of customers enjoyed the show, we understand that this was not what some expected; however, we are content that the show delivered this evening was an arena-standard tribute to the entire K-Pop genre."
