Halle Berry is one of the most iconic actresses of her generation. The 59-year-old scene-stealer portrayed several memorable characters over her impressive career, and became the only African-American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in 2001’s Monster’s Ball.

In the latest news about the Boomerang star, Halle Berry recently sat down with Discussing Film for an interview as part of a press junket for her latest film, Crime 101. In her discussion, Berry opened up about the ageism she’s encountered in Hollywood,

“I’ve felt since I turned 40 that it was harder for me to be seen in an equal way, to get paid equally, and to have equally good parts... if you’re not ready to play the grandma, there’s nothing for you.”

Halle Berry is one of the many actresses who have used their platform to discuss the fickle nature of the film industry, although it remains to be seen what kind of impact her words will ultimately have.

Halle Berry - Takeaways from The Cut profile

Halle Berry recently sat down with The Cut for an exclusive profile ahead of the release of her upcoming Crime 101. In the piece published on February 2, the actress delved into several topics, including how her career changed after winning an Oscar, and the advice she shared with Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo.

Regarding the aftermath of her historic Academy Award win, Berry shared,

“That Oscar didn’t necessarily change the course of my career. After I won it, I thought there was going to be, like, a script truck showing up outside my front door. While I was wildly proud of it, I was still Black that next morning. Directors were still saying, ‘If we put a Black woman in this role, what does this mean for the whole story? Do I have to cast a Black man? Then it’s a Black movie. Black movies don’t sell overseas.’”

Staying on the topic of the Oscars, Berry also shared the following thoughts in a 2024 interview with Marie Claire,

“[…]eternally miffed that no Black woman has come behind me for that best actress Oscar. I’m continually saddened by that year after year. And it’s certainly not because there has been nobody deserving.”

Based on her experiences in the industry, Berry also shared that her advice to Erivo was simple in her profile with The Cut,

“You goddamn deserve it, but I don’t know that it’s going to change your life. It cannot be the validation for what you do, right?”

Halle Berry seems to continue to defy the odds in her career, and her latest film, Crime 101, is in theaters now.
