Bill Cosby is a comedian and actor who has faced criminal charges. After a slew of sexual assault accusations surfaced in 2004 (later amplified by the #MeToo movement), he was subsequently imprisoned for an assault on a Temple University student, for which he served time in jail before being released in 2021 due to a procedural matter.

In spite of the charges, his wife Camille has stuck by his side, though it is believed that the two live separately. His four children remain fiercely private, though some of their struggles have also come to light in recent years.

In the latest news about the once-prominent comedian, Bill Cosby has officially been found liable with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in 1972. The verdict comes after a two-week trial in Santa Monica, California, where Cosby was ultimately found guilty of sexual battery and assault of the plaintiff, Donna Motsinger.

Motsinger filed the lawsuit in 2023 and claims she met Cosby when the two were in their 30s. Her suit describes what happened from her perspective after ingesting some wine with the comedian, as well as some pills that she believed at the time to be Aspirin.

“She woke up in her house with all her clothes off. She knew she had been drugged and r*ped by Bill Cosby.”

After a lengthy deliberation, the jury awarded Motsinger $17.5M in damages and $1.75M for future damages. The future damages were quantified as the result of the trauma from the incident in 1972, including:

“mental suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, inconvenience, grief, anxiety, humiliation, and emotional distress."

Despite the staggering number of allegations against him, Bill Cosby continues to maintain his innocence.

Bill Cosby faces another hefty sum in addition to the original $19M

As the trial progressed, it was decided that Bill Cosby was facing a further payout of an additional $40M in punitive damages for the harm done to the plaintiff in the case. This drives the total amount Cosby will have to pay up to $60M, pending appeal. Donna Motsinger shared the following about her views of the jury’s final verdict:

“I have carried the weight of what happened to me for more than 50 years. It never goes away. Today, a jury saw the truth and held him accountable. That means everything. I hope this gives strength to other survivors who are still waiting for their moment to be heard.”

Interestingly, Bill Cosby’s lawyer has made it clear that she plans on appealing the decision, although no further news is available on that front as of this report.
