Savannah Guthrie has opened up for the first time since her mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing. On February 1, the 84-year-old mother of the Today co-host disappeared from her Arizona home. Since then the Pima County Sheriff's Department has been investigating the case as a suspected abduction. Meanwhile, many conspiracy theories circulated on the internet, some suggesting the involvement of family members in Nancy Guthrie's disappearance.
Weeks after her mother's disappearance, Savannah Guthrie sat down for a multi-part interview with her Today co-host Hoda Kotb. The first part of the interview was aired on Thursday. Among other questions, Hoda asked Savannah how she weathered "cruel speculations" about the family's involvement.
"It's unbearable. And it piles pain upon pain. There are no words. There are no words. I don't understand. I'll never understand. And no one took better care of my mom than my sister and brother-in-law. And no one protected my mom more than my brother, and we love her, and she is our shining light. She's our matriarch. She's all we have," Savannah Guthrie answered.
Notably, the Pima County Sheriff's Department had earlier cleared the Guthrie family as suspects in the case.
Savannah Guthrie recalls hearing about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
In her conversation with Hoda, Savannah reflected on the moment she learned about her mother's disappearance. The NBC host shared that over the weekend, she went to Carson's with her kids. Savannah said that when she returned, she got a call from her sister Annie, who told her, "Mom's missing." The news host noted that her sister was in "panic."
Savannah Guthrie said that the back door was propped open, and they thought that paramedics might have taken Nancy Guthrie after she might have experienced a medical emergency. However, she added:
"We thought maybe they came and there was a stretcher and they took her out the back, but her phone was there and her purse was there and all her things, and it just didn't make any sense. So, you know, Annie and Tommy had already called all the hospitals, but then I'm like, I'm going to call the hospitals. So then I started calling the hospitals and the police were there and talking to her at the same time and it was just chaos and disbelief."
Elsewhere in the interview, Savannah Guthrie shared that she somewhat blamed herself as she suspected someone might have abducted her mother because of her money. The media personality also said that she believed that two ransom notes were real.
Since Nancy Guthrie's disappearance, Savannah has posted multiple plea videos on Instagram. She also announced a $1 million reward for the information leading to her mother.
