Natalie Portman is a supremely talented actress whose skills have been on full display since she made her on-screen debut as a child actress in Luc Besson’s 1994 action classic, Léon: The Professional. While her abilities as a performer have always been evident, she has also been extremely conscious of her platform, regularly speaking out and taking a stand against injustice.

In the latest news about the Black Swan actress, Natalie Portman was recently at The Sundance Film Festival in Utah to promote her upcoming film, The Gallerist, that boasts an ensemble cast which includes Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Charli XCX. While being interviewed on the red carpet by

Variety, Portman gave some insight into her perspective regarding the two recent killings in Minneapolis at the hands of ICE agents:

"It’s really impossible not to talk about what is happening right now and the brutality of ICE and how it has to stop immediately. But also, there’s a beautiful community that Americans are showing right now. They’re showing up for each other, protecting each other and fighting for their freedom."

She added:

"It’s a bittersweet moment to celebrate something we’re so proud of on the backdrop of our nation in pain.”

In a separate interview with Deadline, Natalie Portman called out who she perceived to be the culprits behind these unspeakable tragedies:

"What’s going on in this country right now is absolutely horrific. What the federal government, Trump’s government, Kristi Noem, ICE – what they’re doing is really the worst of the worst of humanity.”

The actress has certainly been doing her part to be vocal about the tensions within the United States, even donning "ICE out" and "Be Good" pins to make it clear which side of the issue she stands on.

Natalie Portman on female directors being snubbed at Academy Awards, more

Interestingly, this was not the only hot-button issue Natalie Portman has been vocal about throughout her time at the Sundance Festival. The actress also made it a point to share her views on female directors being snubbed by the Academy in terms of Oscar nominations in an interview with Glamour UK:

“So many of the best films I saw this year were made by women. You just see the barriers at every level because so many were not recognized at awards time. Between ‘Sorry Baby’ and ‘Left-Handed Girl’ and ‘Hedda’ and ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’… Extraordinary films this year that I think a lot of people are enjoying and loving, but are not getting the accolades they deserve.”

She also took the opportunity to shower praise on The Gallerist co-star Jenna Ortega:

“She’s such a f*cking great actress and so knowledgeable about film. She’s so on and in it. It is rare. I think you’re very focused and in tune with everything. You’re not there to mess around.”

Natalie Portman is using her platform to make her feelings heard, although the results will likely take some time to materialize.
