On February 20, South Korean media outlet reported that BTS' Taehyung's messages have been accepted as evidence in an ongoing lawsuit involving HYBE and Min Hee-jin. The Winter Ahead singer's KakaoTalk messages exchanged with Min Hee-jin were reportedly submitted as evidence during their proceedings.
Following the release of the proceedings’ news, Tae posted a note on his Instagram account about the use of his personal messages as evidence in a court dispute. He stated that he has no intention of picking sides and he also raised concern over the use of his chats without permission.
“These are parts of private conversations shared out of empathy because the person was my acquaintance. I have absolutely no intention of taking any side. However, I find it very disconcerting that the conversations in question were submitted as evidence without my consent.”
Following BTS' Taehyung, the parent company of BIGHIT, HYBE, also addressed the matter. In their statement, HYBE stated that the V’s messages were meant to be confidential and that its goal was to show empathy, not to support particular viewpoints. The company further made it clear that the idol’s chats were presented without prior consent.
"Since it was a private conversation with an acquaintance, it was intended to express empathy, not to agree with any specific remarks from the other party. The artist also wanted to express dissatisfaction about the private conversation being submitted as court evidence without consent," HYBE asserted.
BTS' Taehyung talked about plagiarism concerns in the industry
According to a report from Sports.Khan, new details from the Min Hee-jin vs. HYBE ruling surfaced that drew serious attention online.
In the legal dispute between Hee-jin and HYBE, which focused on allegations of plagiarism, Hee-jin specifically asserted that HYBE’s new girl group, ILLIT, had imitated another girl group, NewJeans.
The court examined whether Hee-jin's claim constituted a breach of trust. But instead of treating it as a factual accusation, the court determined that her statement was more of an opinion and not a claim about copied elements.
And during this process, KakaoTalk messages were submitted as evidence. As per reports, the Rainy Days maker discussed industry wide plagiarism issues. BTS' Taehyung stated that plagiarism issues are common and that he, too, thought the works are somewhat similar.
“(Plagiarism stories always come up; there’s never been a time they didn't). Sigh... I know, right. Even I looked at it and thought, ‘Ah, this is similar...’” BTS’ Taehyung said.
BTS' Taehyung was not directly involved in the legal dispute, but his messages were referenced as supporting evidence.
