Former US representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared her thoughts about Don Lemon’s arrest while speaking to Bill Maher on his show. For context, Lemon was arrested for allegedly disrupting a service at a Minnesota Church on January 18. In other words, he allegedly violated the FACE Act. The former CNN anchor was taken into custody on January 29 but was subsequently released.

During the talk show, Maher mentioned Lemon’s arrest, to which someone from the audience said, “Yes.” Maher said the tone felt like the person approved of the arrest. He said:

“It’s not good to arrest him.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene said:

“Well, I’m going to say he violated the FACE Act. He went into a church, disrupted their worship, and then later in an interview, compared them to white supremacists. That’s not journalism. That’s activism.”

Bill Maher asked if that meant Don Lemon should have gotten arrested. Greene said that he disrupted a worship service and also stopped people’s right to worship God. According to her, this was a violation of the FACE Act. Marjorie Taylor Greene went on to say:

“And under the Biden administration, pro-lifers were sent to prison up to 11 years for praying in front of an abortion clinic, and they were convicted under the FACE Act. So I don’t think that’s journalism. That’s not First Amendment, going in and harassing people in the middle of church.”

Bill Maher joked that they could charge Don Lemon for being “not cool.” Greene said she was in favor of the arrest.

Don Lemon says journalists should not be silenced

The former CNN anchor addressed his viewers on the January 30 episode of The Don Lemon Show on YouTube. He mentioned that journalists are being silenced, but despite that, he would speak up. He said:

“I think journalists should not be silenced. I think this is a time, a very critical time for journalists in this country to stand up to this tyrannical administration.”

Lemon said that he had worked as a journalist for over 30 years and was experienced because of his age. He explained that journalism was protected by the Constitution and the First Amendment, and it was a job shared by many journalists around the world. He felt the situation was an important moment for journalists everywhere.

Don Lemon also said he was thankful to everyone who supported him, sent messages, and offered financial or other help, and that the response had been overwhelming. He mentioned:

“And I do think right now that people understand that again this is a very critical time and I hope that this continues and to support not just me.”

Lemon said that if one looks at any form of governance, they will notice that all they wanted to do was silence the media. Hence, he felt it was important to stand up against it. Don Lemon mentioned that his colleagues from CNN took a unanimous stance to support him. He thanked them, saying he had no animus for the media channel. Nevertheless, he felt it was time for all journalists to stand up.
