Kpop global sensation BTS just made a grand comeback, and the album and set design weren't the only things telling a story.

BTS had a huge comeback show in South Korea for their newly released album Arirang. The show, just like the album, was filled with emotions and stories representing the 7 idols, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. Another element from the show, which was being broadcast live across the world on Netflix, and left the viewers awestruck, was their costumes.

The group was wearing custom looks from the Korean designer Jay Songzio. The looks were mostly black, with white accents and silver hardware. But the story behind them goes deeper than that. The designer explained that the whole idea behind the layered looks was to “carry the turbulent history of Korea’s past in body and mind, portraying the image of new heroes who forge a new future.”

He further added, “We drew inspiration from those who shaped Korean history—valiant warriors, dignified and intellectual scholars, and artists with profound depth and inspiration—to depict BTS as pioneers of Korea’s new history.”

In an interview with the New York Times, the brand expressed,

"Although BTS has worn Songzio outfits multiple times, this is the first time we collaborated from the start to conceptualize the collection. It’s moving that a Korean icon and a Korean brand are creating a historic moment together.”
“We reinterpreted BTS members as heroic figures who will lead Korean culture toward a brighter future. BTS emphasized Korean history while striving for a modern interpretation. We also aimed to reinterpret Korea’s roots and sensibilities, expressing the unique Korean sentiment of ‘han’ (恨). ‘Han’ signifies Korea itself, as well as the longing and sorrow stemming from its turbulent and difficult history.”
He added, “Initially, we tried reinterpreting traditional armor, but the layered design became too rigid for dynamic movements. So, we incorporated the flexibility of hanbok.”

Giving us a deeper insight into the meaning behind the outfits. Each outfit was different but still looked cohesive, perfectly representing the differences and similarities amongst the members.

Hybe, BTS's company, had approached the avant-garde house 2 months prior, and with the outfits, a character was created for each member,

  • RM: The Hero
  • Jin: The Artist
  • Suga: The Architect
  • J-Hope: The Sound Man (sorigun)
  • Jimin: The Poet
  • V: The Nobleman (seonbi)
  • Jungkook: The Vanguard

Not only that, but each member had their own contributions to the looks as they gave suggestions on details such as colors and accessories, to make it their own. The group and their company are also looking at future collaborations with the brand, though no deal has yet been signed.
