Professional golfer Tiger Woods once again made the headlines following a recent DUI arrest, bringing renewed attention to his past accidents on the road. Among them, his 2021 crash remains the most serious, leaving him with life-threatening injuries and a long recovery journey.

What happened in Tiger Woods' 2021 accident?

On February 23, 2021, Tiger Woods had his worst accident in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. From an aerial video, it was seen that the SUV crossed a median, hit a tree, and landed in a nearby brush before being engaged in a high-speed rollover collision.

According to reports, Woods was speeding on a curvy road at above 80 mph. It was believed by investigators that Woods might have unintentionally hit the throttle rather than the brake. Additionally, authorities reported that Woods was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and that there were no indications of impairment.

Woods suffered severe injuries from the collision, including a broken ankle and several fractures in his right leg. His injuries were so bad that he needed emergency surgery right away since his bone broke through the skin. After being taken to Harbor–UCLA Medical Center, medical professionals attempted to stabilize his condition.

Months later, at the Hero World Challenge, Woods told the reporters:

“I’m lucky to be alive and also have a limb.”

Long road to recovery

Following the accident, the professional golfer went through multiple surgeries and procedures. Tiger Woods described his recovery process as the most challenging experience of his life.

In later interviews, he shared:

“I understand more of the rehab processes because of my past injuries, but this was more painful than anything I have ever experienced.”

He added:

“My physical therapy has been keeping me busy. I do my routines every day and am focused on my No. 1 goal right now: walking on my own. Taking it one step at a time.”

His career was further impacted by the crash's aftermath, which included recurrent ailments and more surgeries in the years that followed, such as back and ankle surgery.

Golfer’s history of car crashes

The 2021 crash was not the first time the professional golfer had problems on the road. His history of car crashes began in November 2009, when he collided with a tree and a fire hydrant close to his Florida residence. His then-wife, Elin Nordegren, was also at the scene. Tiger Woods released a statement after the incident:

“The only person responsible for this accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false.”

He added:

“As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I’m pretty sore.”

Tiger Woods concluded:

“This situation is my fault, and it’s obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I’m human and I’m not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn’t happen again. This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.”

Woods eventually withdrew from other engagements that month, including his own Chevron World Challenge charity tournament, after receiving treatment for facial lacerations. The professional golfer also paid $164 for the careless driving charge.

Then, in May 2017, Tiger Woods was found dozing off behind the wheel of his car with the engine running. After being accused of driving while intoxicated, he entered a guilty plea to careless driving. He clarified at the time that alcohol had no role in the incident and that it was the result of an unanticipated reaction to prescription drugs that he self-medicated.

Tiger Woods was sentenced to a year of probation, 50 hours of community service, and a $250 fine. Woods released a statement:

“I take full responsibility for my actions. I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”

He added:

“I would like to apologize with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too.”

Latest 2026 DUI

In a press conference, Sheriff John Budensiek of Jupiter Island, Florida, released a statement that professional golfer Tiger Woods had been charged with a DUI, causing property damage, and refusing to take a legal test. Officials say that after trying to pass a pickup truck on a two-lane road, Woods' Land Rover flipped. Despite passing a breathalyzer test, he declined a urinalysis, which resulted in more charges.

Tiger Woods was released after eight hours. The sheriff explained:

“Mr. Woods did a breathalyzer test with triple zeros, but when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused, so he’s been charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.”

He added:

“We know we arrested a high profile figure … but it doesn’t matter who you are. If you break the law, we’re going to follow the law. That’s a really easy path to take.”
