Lady Gaga again used her voice for more than just music at a recent performance in Tokyo, Japan, during the Mayhem Ball world tour. As she was in the middle of a performance at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, she stopped and used the opportunity to speak to the crowd and share a heartfelt message regarding events that were currently transpiring in the United States. This was just another instance in which Lady Gaga used her platform for more than just music and for more than just herself. This event was shared across social media and caught the attention of those both within the United States and in Japan.

Her words were far from arbitrary, however, as there has been much unrest in America in the last few weeks due to actions taken by the United States’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, particularly after two fatal shootings were committed by ICE officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This has created much unrest and has sparked many different discussions and reactions within America and across the world. Lady Gaga’s actions at the concert were just another instance in which she brought attention to this issue and sparked further discussion and reaction.

Lady Gaga Censures ICE at Tokyo Concert

During Lady Gaga’s performance in Tokyo, Japan, on January 29th, she took a break between songs and used the opportunity to speak to the crowd about

“something that’s extremely important to me… and especially in America right now.”

Although she was in Japan for the performance, she was speaking to the crowd as someone who was greatly affected by the events she had been following in America and the turmoil that had been transpiring within the United States. Gaga expressed that she was feeling heavy in her heart because of the children and families that she believed were being unfairly targeted by ICE, and the anxiety that many people were feeling due to reports that were circulating within parts of the United States.

She mentioned the Minnesota situation, including the deaths of American citizens, which has brought a nationwide reaction, and how a community can lose a sense of security. Gaga’s speech was quite simple: a plea for compassion, accountability, and a change in how things are handled. Before she went into her next song, she dedicated it to

“everyone who is suffering or feels alone.”

She did not mention politics, but rather spoke in terms of compassion and how people can relate to others. The speech went viral in no time, and people are sharing videos and reacting to it. Some are supporting her for using a major event to bring attention to a major problem, while others are wondering how politics should even be brought up in an international concert.

One thing is for sure: the speech has been heard and shared by millions of people around the globe and has become one of the most popular speeches from her tour so far. In a time when everyone is speaking about politics and how it affects society, Lady Gaga’s speech added to the mix. As she finishes the Japan segment of her tour and heads back to the United States, it is likely to be a moment in time when her speech is not only about her music but also about the message she chose to share with thousands of fans around the globe.
