The 20/20 episode Justice for Faith revisited the gruesome murder of Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old student at the University of North Carolina. ABC News reported that the student's body was found around 11 a.m. on September 7, 2012. She was severely beaten and covered in blood while lying in a bed at the off-campus apartment where she had been staying with her roommate, Karena Rosario.Investigators worked for 9 years to solve Faith's murder case, and they eventually identified the alleged killer, Miguel Salguero-Olivares, in 2021 through advanced DNA testing technology. Miguel's defense claimed that Karena knew more about Faith's killing than she revealed. The defense pointed to a red substance that was reportedly spotted on Karena's hand when Karena met another friend, Jordan McCrary, on the night of the murder and argued that it was blood. Karena rejected the claim made by Miguel's defense and stated that the substance was not blood but might be vomit because she had been drinking red slushies earlier that evening. However, in September 2021, police arrested Miguel after tracking his movements, collecting his DNA, and matching it to the DNA evidence recovered from the crime scene. CBS 17 Plus revealed that on October 23, 2026, the jury announced that it had reached verdicts on all four charges, such as first-degree r*pe, first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and first-degree s*xual assault, and found Miguel guilty on each count.Continue reading more about Faith Hedgepeth's story in 20/20's Justice for Faith.20/20's Justice for Faith: Full timeline of UNC student’s gruesome 2012 murder View this post on Instagram Instagram PostSeptember 6-7, 2012The News and Observer revealed that Faith first attended a recruitment event for an Indigenous sorority before going to UNC's Davis Library with Karena. Later, the two returned to Karena's apartment, where Faith was staying temporarily, changed their clothes, and then drove to a nightclub called The Thrill located in downtown Chapel Hill. They arrived at the club at around 12:40 a.m., and they consumed alcohol.Since Karena felt sick, Faith drove them back to the apartment after leaving the club. According to court records, Karena said that she couldn't remember how she got upstairs and recalled that she vomited in bed before moving to the bathroom.ABC 11 revealed that a neighbor living downstairs heard three or four loud thumping noises coming from the apartment. Later that morning, Karena needed a ride home and tried to contact Faith but received no response. Therefore, she called their friend Marisol Rangel for a ride.At around 11 a.m. on September 7, Marisol and Karena walked up the stairs and called out Faith's name several times but didn't hear anything back. The two then went into the bedroom and found Faith lying dead, partially wrapped in a comforter and with blood splatter throughout the bedroom.202120/20's Justice for Faith revealed that a new DNA technology gave investigators a new way to examine the case. Investigators used the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) method, applied the genetic genealogy technique, and traced family connections linked to the DNA recovered from the crime scene. The SNP analysis indicated that the person connected to the sample was of Latino ancestry. Based on those findings and a photograph discovered on social media, investigators identified a potential suspect, Miguel, who was 19 years old when Faith had been killed.Justice for Faith showed that the police arrested Miguel in September 2021 and compared the recovered DNA evidence with Miguel. The test results showed a match, but Miguel denied knowing Faith or having any connection to her.October 23, 2026After the conviction, officials organized a news conference at the Durham County Courthouse and featured remarks from Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry. According to Justice for Faith, the jury announced that it had reached verdicts on all four charges:First-degree murder.First-degree r*pe.First-degree burglary.First-degree s*xual assault. After reviewing the evidence, jurors found Miguel guilty on every count. Miguel also received extra prison terms to be served consecutively for the other convictions.CBS 17 showed that the court imposed a sentence of 64 to 89 months for first-degree burglary, 240 to 348 months for first-degree r*pe, and another 240 to 348 months for first-degree s*xual assault.Follow Soap Central for more updates on 20/20's Justice for Faith.
