48 Hours - A Deadly Obsession: The Murder Trial of Dr. Kosowski revisits the shocking death of a 41-year-old attorney named Steven Cozzi, who went missing from a law office bathroom in Largo, Florida, before his death. According to 7 News, a judge in Pinellas County declared Dr. Tomasz Kosowski guilty of killing Steven. The police revealed that Steven's body had never been recovered.

Prosecutors explained in court papers that on the day of the murder, Tomasz answered the call while sitting in a Toyota pickup truck outside the office. They even stated that he had items prepared for the murder. The items included trash bags, a syringe filled with a paralyzing drug, and a wagon meant to carry the body away.

Last month, Tomasz gave the final statement to the court and made fun of the prosecutors and said that he cleaned the bathroom, placed Steven's body on a cart, rolled it out, and lifted the cart with the body onto a truck.

CNN reported that Dr. Kosowski had a history of representing himself in court. In 2019, he initiated a lawsuit against former colleagues over a billing dispute. By 2022, he had again chosen to act as his own counsel and placed himself in direct negotiations with the lawyers representing the doctors, and among them was Steven.

A Deadly Obsession revealed that Steven went to the bathroom inside the Blanchard Law Office where he worked and never came back. His colleagues testified that he left his phone, keys, and wallet at his desk and seemed to be in the middle of writing an email.

As per A Deadly Obsession, Court records revealed that Tomasz was involved in a bitter lawsuit against his former employer, and Steven was representing some of the defendants. Witnesses said that Tomasz often acted aggressively toward Steven and even tried to remove him from the civil case.

Here's the full timeline of what happened to Steven Cozzi.

February 2023

On February 10, Detective Lance Moore visited several online stores to check Gorilla carts. After six days, Moore found the phone that contained a photo taken of Michael Montgomery's car outside their residence.

As per A Deadly Obsession, investigation reports revealed that Michael was the husband of Steven. On February 23, Tomasz searched for license plate flippers and license plate covers on the internet.

March 2023

On March 2, Moore found that Tomasz's search history included several entries connected to Steven and his husband, Michael Montgomery. A Deadly Obsession exposed that the records showed searches for Steven and Michael's wedding, Steven's residence, and details about Steven's personal background.

The history also contained a Google Maps page that displayed Steven's home, the warranty deed for that property, a Zillow listing for the same address, and another Google Maps page linked to Steven's previous home.

On March 20, at 3:06 a.m., Tomasz searched for a paralyzing drug named succinylcholine on Google. He even asked Google about how long the medication remains effective.

According to Fox 13 News, a board‑certified anesthesiologist named Dr. Hector Vila testified in court that succinylcholine forces the muscles to contract, and as a result, it leaves a person unable to move or breathe. The doctor further explained that the person affected by the drug remains fully conscious, aware of everything happening, and able to feel all sensations. Investigators reported that this medication was found inside Tomasz’s car at the time of his arrest.

On March 21, surveillance footage revealed that a person entered the building with a large box just after 8:30 a.m. At 10:22 a.m., Tomasz struggled to wheel a heavy cart out of the building toward a truck, and then returned to his home in Tarpon Springs.

Investigators revealed that the truck's model was a Toyota Tundra, which had arrived at and stopped in Tomasz's garage. When Tomasz was arrested, detectives reported discovering Steven's blood in the law firm's bathroom, on the floor of his garage, in the car he was driving, and inside the truck.

A Deadly Obsession mentioned that a DNA expert testified that Steven's blood was confirmed in the bathroom. Tomasz’s DNA and Steven’s blood were also found together on a paper towel outside the bathroom.

CNN mentioned that Tomasz Kosowski delivered the final statement in his murder case held in Pinellas County, Florida. He stressed that there was no body and no death certificate to prove Steven was dead. He made fun of the prosecution’s claim about the killing and the disposal of Steven’s body, and he spoke as if he himself were the one involved.

He said,

"Now, I committed this murder in a common area, in the bathroom, in the middle of a busy office complex."

Tomasz also stated that nobody heard anything and nobody saw anything, even though several people were only 10 to 20 feet away from the bathroom. He mocked that he cleaned the bathroom, placed Steven's body on a cart, rolled it out, and lifted the cart with the body onto a truck. He even described the incident as an act that happened due to superhuman strength. He said that after performing all these activities, he drove away from that area.

According to A Deadly Obsession, Tomasz further told the judge that it was not only physically impossible to do what the state claimed but also unreasonable within the time frame. After his closing statement, Judge Joseph Bulone remarked that usually the jurors returned to deliberate, reached a verdict, marked the proper box, and the process ended there. As per CNN, Judge Bulone found Koswoski guilty of first-degree murder of Steven Cozzi.

A Deadly Obsession revealed that the investigators traced Tomasz's movements through cellphone data and surveillance footage. The records revealed that he travelled to a remote section west of Miami along the Tamiami Trail, which is also called U.S. Highway 41. Authorities believed that he disposed of the body in a dumpster, which was later emptied by a garbage truck. The truck driver reported noticing an unusually foul odor during that stop.

Prosecutors mentioned that video from the garbage truck captured the dumpster being emptied. In the footage, a large trash bag dropped in a way that did not match the fall of ordinary garbage. They noted that the bag’s shape and the manner in which it fell were consistent with something that could contain a human body. Court documents also revealed that a police cadaver dog signaled the presence of human remains in the dumpster.
