At first, police treated the case as a tragic fall, but the autopsy reports and medical reviews changed the classification to homicide. A Death in the Stairwell: The detective was shocked to see a huge amount of blood

In A Death in the Stairwell, Detective James Krueger disclosed that the amount of blood inside the house of the Davis family was shocking, and it covered nearly every surface. Alison had already permitted him to search the property as the lead investigator from the New Haven Police Department.

The bodycam footage revealed Krueger telling Alison that if she agreed to the search, she would need to sign a form to show that she understood. When the officers were about to search her bedroom, she warned them that her pit bull, Willow, sometimes growls at unfamiliar people who come near. Krueger didn't go to that room where Willow was present.

The detective lifted the restrictions and officially cleared the bloody scene. The sight remained horrific, but still at that stage, he considered the case to be an accident.

Inside the hospital, CT scans and an autopsy revealed that Kevin had multiple skull fractures and injuries that were inconsistent with a simple fall. The best friend of Alison, Kasey Klemm, reported that Alison had blood on her fingernails, around her cuticles and even on her phone.

Three months after Kevin's death, the case shifted from an accident to a homicide investigation because the police suspected Alison as the only other person in the house and no other family members were there.

Investigators also noted inconsistencies in her statements because she once told them that she had slept downstairs after an argument but told Kevin's mother that they had been in bed together. Krueger and his team believed that Kevin's body had been moved to make it look like he had fallen.

Alison's 911 call also raised suspicion because she sounded rehearsed, not natural. The bodycam footage further showed her laughing with paramedics rather than showing signs of panic or grief.

In addition, text messages from Kevin hours before his death hinted that marital tension was going on between them. The prosecutors argued that Alison had beaten him with a weapon that was never found.
