48 Hours: Caught in the Crossfire revisits the shocking crime carried out by a wealthy pawnshop owner Darren Mack, in Reno, Nevada. According to police officials, he brutally stabbed his wife Charla Mack, who didn't want to live anymore with her husband.
The officials stated that Darren severely stabbed her to death and later drove to a parking garage and shot Family Court Judge Chuck Weller into his office window across the street. The crime committed by Darren revealed his anger and conflict about the divorce that Charla demanded from him.
The successful Reno businessman Darren Mack married Charla in 1995 and from the start everyone described their chemistry as undeniable. Darren is the oldest son in his family whose parents owned one of the city's largest pawn shops. Following his father's death in the 1986 plane crash, Darren inherited half of the family business. Later, court revealed that his personal worth is estimated to be $10 million.

Before June 12, 2006
Darren Mack and his wife were going through divorce issues and their fights over custody of their daughter and money worsened after Judge Weller ordered Darren to pay Charla $10,000 each month in temporary alimony and child support.
Darren felt angry and thought the court was against him and therefore he began planning the attacks very carefully. He made a 'to-do-list' where his murder steps were written. He then rented a silver Ford Explorer and parked in downtown Reno's parking lot.
June 12, 2006
The 10:41 a.m. camera footage caught Darren Mack arriving at the parking garage to set up his sniper position 24 minutes before he shot Weller. The judge was badly injured but survived.
Before the shootout, Charla arrived in a car to drop off her daughter Erika. A childhood friend of Darren, Dan Osborne, took Erika upstairs to watch television while Darren took his wife into the garage and stabbed her 7 times. Soon after, Osborne's dog covered in blood started barking loudly and alerted Erika and Osborne.
When the dog started barking frantically, Osborne walked downstairs to check on it. He saw Darren's hand tightly wrapped in a towel and also witnessed the dog coming out of the garage completely soaked in blood. He became frightened and immediately took Erika and escaped from that place.
Shortly after, Darren called Osborne and asked him to meet at a local Starbucks because he wanted to speak briefly with his daughter. After their meeting, Darren disappeared from there.

48 Hours: Caught in the Crossfire revealed that police rushed to Darren's townhouse after Osborne's 911 call and found Charla's body in the garage. Investigators also discovered Darren's written 'to-do-list' and found that the list is connected to both the murder and the sniper attack. Immediately, the police began a nationwide manhunt.
On June 22, 2006, Darren Mack surrendered at a resort pool in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, before being flown back to the United States. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for killing his wife and entered an Alford plea for the attempted murder of Judge Weller.
