CBS's long-running true-crime documentary series, 48 Hours, is back with a new episode this week. Titled What the Cameras Saw, this episode will deal with the 2022 mysterious death of Savannah Tolbert in North Alabama.
On November 15, 2022, Savannah was found dead inside a red Tesla car at a Huntsville strip mall on Highway 72. Savannah had a gunshot wound to the back of her head, and the police initially suspected it was a suicide until the evidence did not add up.
After digging up the CCTV footage of a nearby location, Savannah's husband David Tolbert became a prime suspect. After almost three rounds of questioning, David was arrested. In May 2025, David was found guilty of murdering his wife, Savannah, and staging it as a suicide. David also appealed his conviction, but the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals upheld it in January 2026.
Here's more about 48 Hours' latest episode, What the Cameras Saw.
48 Hours: What happened to Savannah Tolbert?

Savannah Tolbert was a 37-year-old mother and wife who lived in Alabama. On Tuesday, November 15, 2022, Savannah was shot dead inside a red Tesla. According to CBS News, her husband, David Tolbert, was captured on the CCTV footage in the store after he discovered her lifeless body in the car. He seemed upset and disturbed initially. However, it was all a cover-up. After the police arrived at the crime scene, the store's owners said that they saw David tearing up.
48 Hours: The investigation of Savannah Tolbert's murder

During the initial investigation, the detectives thought Savannah's death was a suicide. However, they soon noticed evidence that didn't add up. For instance, her gun was in her right hand, and the bullet hole was on the left side of her head. Reports suggested there was no gunpowder residue on her hand.
Savannah's sisters Holly and April said that Savannah would never kill herself. The police found out that the gun used to shoot Savannah was registered under her name. The cops also found a shell casing on the rear seat behind the driver. The Tesla was taken as evidence.
Savannah's husband, David Tolbert, was a former correctional officer who was helping the owners of a new store prepare for a health inspection. David said that Savannah showed up at the store to meet him. However, the investigators learned that the couple had been living separately for the past few months.
48 Hours: David Tolbert was having an affair with Chelsea Finch

David claimed that Savannah was suffering from mental health issues. The investigators also learned about a woman named Chelsea Finch, an aerospace engineer. Chelsea and David were having an affair.
According to Chelsea, David had apparently given Savannah her divorce papers, but she had not signed them. The papers were later found in the red Tesla where Savannah's body was found. David told the investigators that he met Savannah in 2013 and they got married in 2020. Savannah was previously married to Andy Foster, and they had a daughter, Avery.
48 Hours: David Tolbert blamed Savannah's mental health condition

During the police interview, David claimed that Savannah was afraid to stay at their house because she thought it was haunted. According to David, this was the reason why Savannah moved out of their house.
The investigators found that Valley Pool store camera footage showed David walking up to the red Tesla. Shortly after, David returned to the store, and an unidentified man was seen standing near the Tesla as Savannah was seen approaching the car's passenger door.
The unidentified person walked away, and 20 minutes later David was seen walking to his car. David said that even after he opened the car door, he found Savannah lying dead in the front passenger seat.
During the second police interview, the investigators asked David about a mini cannon that they found in his car. David said that the gunpowder residue on his hand came from the mini cannon.
The investigators also found out that David switched off the car's Sentry Mode, which records and monitors everything happening outside the vehicle. The forensics report suggested that since there was no gunpowder residue found on Savannah, she was apparently shot from a short distance. On December 9, 2022, when David came for the third police interview, the police arrested him.
48 Hours: David Tolbert found guilty of Savannah Tolbert's murder

David Tolbert went on trial in May 2025 in Huntsville, Alabama. The prosecutors' case centred on the security camera video. The prosecutors argued that David shot Savannah and went back inside the store. Since the security footage was 100 yards away from the car, they couldn't specify which car door David opened.
The defense case was based on Savannah's mental health struggles. Chelsea told the court that David wanted to have a future with her. Chelsea broke up with David following his arrest.
In the end, the court found David Tolbert guilty of capital murder. David Tolbert received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. David Tolbert is currently locked up at Limestone Correctional Facility, where he once worked as a corrections officer.
