A Different World sequel cast: Meet the returning icons and new generation at Hillman

Netflix's upcoming A Different World sequel reunites the previous characters from the renowned college sitcom and brings along a different batch of new students who are eager to leave their mark at Hillman College.

Even though the setting is a fictional HBCU, the series provides a platform for not only welcoming new students but also bringing the previous characters onto the campus. The main character of the story is Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert.

Starting her first year at college, she has to carve her own path while adhering to the obligations imposed by her family’s legacy at Hillman. The 10-episode dramedy, under the supervision of Felicia Pride, is focused on issues of friendship, ambitions, and growth of personality in a modern Black college life.

A look at the returning stars in A Different World sequel

A Different World sequel reintroduces numerous characters from the original series, allowing their stories to continue through family connections, teaching responsibilities, and other means. Their presence also creates a link between the Hillman of the past and the experiences of today's students.

So, here's a look at who's coming back (via Every Toolfy):

Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert Wayne: She is married to Dwayne and is also a mother. Whitley has been famous for her high fashion and efforts in building her own skincare company. Her daughter Deborah's college journey gives her a new connection to Hillman.

Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne: A gifted math and engineering enthusiast recognized for his signature glasses. Now Deborah's father, Dwayne returns as an important Hillman figure in the A Different World sequel.

Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson: Fans know him as one of Dwayne's closest buddies. This time, his connection to the new generation comes through his son, Shaquille Johnson, who chooses Hillman while pursuing his athletic ambitions.

Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks: She is the outspoken activist and creative spirit from the original series. But in the sequel to A Different World, Freddie is now a professor and serves as a mentor to Rashida Duvall.

The cast that will be seen again in the new season also includes Charnele Brown as Dr. Kimberly Reese, Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, and Glynn Turman as Colonel Bradford Taylor. Jenifer Lewis reprises her role as Professor Davenport, while Jada Pinkett Smith returns as Lena James. Karen Malina White and Ajai Sanders are also listed as returning in their original roles as Charmaine Brown and Gina Deveaux.

Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne: The key figure in the sequel, Deborah is the daughter of Hillman's well-known alumnus.

Alijah Kai as Rashida Duvall: She is a first-generation college student studying criminal justice.

Cornell Young IV plays Shaquille Johnson: Shaquille is a highly rated football prospect and Ron Johnson's son.

Jordan Aaron as Amir Rodale: He's comfortable with his queer identity and is a psychology major from Harlem.

Kennedi Reece plays Hazel Henry, a small-town, church-raised student learning to develop her own beliefs. Meanwhile, Chibuikem Uche portrays Kojo Achebe, a fashion entrepreneur with Ghanaian-Nigerian roots and a London connection who is working toward his creative vision.

The new cast of A Different World sequel also has Method Man as Coach Coles, Norman Nixon Jr. as Professor Baptiste, Tichina Arnold as Darlene Duvall, and Raven Goodwin as Dr. Brooklyn Boyer. Joshua Suiter also appears as Andre and more.
