A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 3 recap: Egg's secret revealed

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1's third episode marks a turning point in this HBO series. It is the closing minutes of this episode that mark the turning point of the series, as the previous two acts build towards the big reveal. For the uninitiated, the writers of the HBO series decided to reveal Egg's identity this early in this season, hinting at more surprises over the next three episodes.

This episode mostly revolved around Dunk and Egg enjoying the first day of the tourney. Until Aerion enters the picture and the episode takes a darker turn.

Here are some of the major events in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1, Episode 3:

• Dunk can't compete in the tourney

This A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 episode opens with Egg training Dunk's horse, Thunder. Dunk is nervous about the Ashford tourney. When the knight asks his squire to get the armor, Egg tells Dunk that he need not worry about the tourney, as only knights from the noble houses would be allowed to participate in the tourney on the first day.

Dunk and Egg are lazing around when Plummer asks Dunk's audience. The tournament organizer has an offer to the hedge knight: Dunk's opponent is ready to throw in the fight so that his father can win a bet, but Ser Duncan the Tall refuses this offer, choosing to contest in the tourney honestly.

Then, the two visit the jousting venue as the audience. The knights at the center of this jousting are Egg's brother, Aerion Targaryen, and Ser Humfrey Hardyng. Aerion cheats the first time by deliberately ducking the knight's attack, and the second time, he stabs the horse, causing it to fall on Hardyng. An unnamed man puts the horse and the knight out of their misery by stabbing them.

Meanwhile, the public turns on Aerion, and the Kingsguards try to quell the people, resulting in violence breaking out as Egg and Dunk leave the venue.

• Aerion's ambush

Dunk and Egg are rather reeling from what happened in the jousting, as the squire tells the hedge knight that Aerion willingly cheated in an earlier scene of this A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 episode. On the way to Ser Lyonel Baratheon's tent, Dunk and Egg meet a fortune teller who tells Egg that the young boy will be a king one day, but he will die horribly, a fate already known to the fans.

Then, at Lyonel's tent, Egg tells Dunk that he will attend Tanselle's puppet play and then get his shield. But things take a dark turn as Aerion is personally offended by the death of the puppet dragon, even if the play is about a legend older than Targaryen came to Westeros. He begins to break Tanselle's fingers when Egg runs to Dunk and alerts the hedge knight, who is at Raymun Fossoway's tent.

• Dunk hits the royal prince:

The hedge knight strikes the royal prince. As the guards hold Dunk, Aerion informs him that one of his teeth is loose. Thus, Aerion orders the guards to hold Dunk on the floor as he readies to break the hedge knight's teeth. That's when Egg enters the tent himself and orders the guards to let Dunk go, revealing himself as Aegon V Targaryen. This A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 episode ends here.
