The penultimate episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 was a devastating entry in this light-hearted entry in the Game of Thrones universe. The officially released promo sees Maekar Targaryen requesting Dunk to take Aegon V as a squire, and the hedge knight refusing to do so. But that should not be for long, as the episode releasing next Sunday will probably end with Dunk accepting Egg as his squire.

We already know that HBO is working on a second series, and the number of seasons has remained unconfirmed. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 adapts The Hedge Knight, the first novel in the three-book Tales of Dunk and Egg saga. But showrunner Ira Parker did confirm that George R.R. Martin gave him a rough outline for nearly 12 stories in The Hollywood Reporter interview:

"Even though we don’t have the ins and outs of every story, we know canonically the major beats of Dunk and Egg throughout their lives. So we wouldn’t necessarily run into the same trouble as the flagship did. And George has outlined 12 more of these stories that he’s shared with me. These stories take them all the way through their lives. Some of these are just a paragraph, but they give you a sense of where they’re going to go and the people who come back in and out of the story."

He further stated,

"And, look, I hope everybody likes this and I hope we get to do more. But I don’t have a crystal ball. I actually don’t know — in spite of how long I’ve been doing this — what it is that audiences really respond to. Everybody likes to think they know, right? But at the end of the day, we are Game of Thrones without all the stuff. We have some trees and we have some horses. What was it [that made the original show a hit]? Was it the dead coming to kill mankind? Was it the dragons? Was it the politics? Seeing a different family every week? Or just the epic-ness of the original and of House of the Dragon? Or is it the hope that I have? We have one of the ingredients: Two unusual characters — like Arya and the Hound, or Brienne and Podrick — who are paired together and having conversations. I hope that’s what [made Thrones work]. It’s a big part of what it was for me. So I hope we get to make as many of these as possible. I would say HBO’s plan is for us to do the three novellas, and that’s it. But I would do 12 of these. I would do four now, then four more 10 years from now, and then four more 10 years after that — take them all the way through their lives and just like [Richard Linklater’s Boyhood]."

The A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 6 promo runs for a minute long and we see the funeral for the Targaryens together for Baelor's funeral. After that, Maekar requests that Dunk accept Egg as his squire, but the hedge knight refuses.

However, given how Ser Duncan the Tall's life plays out in the rest of the Game of Thrones universe, it is safe to assume that Dunk accepts Egg as his squire in the last act of the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 finale.

With the release of the sixth episode, the entirety of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 will be available on HBO Max. Until then, re-watch the first five episodes.
