A Thousand Blows Season 2 arrives with a multitude of differences from its previous season. As a show with the primary focus of the world of bare-knuckle boxing, a significant part of the storyline revolved around it in the first season.
However, in the second season, creator Steven Knight has brought forth these changes to cater to the overall appeal of the storyline. These changes undoubtedly enhanced the depth of the characters. It makes the viewers able to resonate further with them. So, let’s discuss the five things that this Hulu drama did differently in A Thousand Blows Season 2
5 things A Thousand Blows Season 2 did differently
1) The aspect of brutality in A Thousand Blows Season 2
It cannot be denied that the steady development in the complexities in the second season has been quite different from that in the first season. However, a striking difference that this season brought forth is the level of brutality in the storyline.
Though the first season of the series had its fair share of gruesome scenes, the second season of the series arrived with brutal scenes that were truly unexpected. It enhanced the overall appeal of the series. It also eventually made the storyline even more authentic and resonated deeply with realism, making a permanent place in the hearts of the viewers.
2) Hezekiah and Mary’s screen time
Unlike the previous season, in A Thousand Blows Season 2, Mary and Hezekiah spend quite a lot of time away from one another, causing them to not get screentime together. In this season, the focus is on their individual paths, the journeys that they have to traverse to find their way back to each other.
Knight, while discussing the relationship between Hezekiah and Mary, indicates that they have a “feeling of inevitability”. He also adds that there is a distinct “gravity” to their relationship, which does not need words to express the emotions that are going on between them. This enhanced the connection with the audience even further with this new approach to Hezekiah and Mary’s screen time together.
3) Unable to find happiness after achieving the goals
A significant change from the first season of the series to A Thousand Blows Season 2 is that the characters achieve their goals, yet are unable to find the happiness that initially drove them. This can especially be seen in Hezekiah’s case. Unlike the previous season, in this season, Hezekiah initially seems to know what he wants to achieve, and he even achieves it.
However, after doing so, the “look at the world” completely changes. The achievements do not bring him the happiness that he thought he would have. Mary’s situation is also quite similar. Her mother’s death completely transforms the trajectory of her goals. Erin Doherty, while discussing Mary’s situation in the series, indicates the significance of “parental figures.” Mary is now going through an “emptiness” which is undeniably bringing forth a distinct level of depth in the series.
4) Alice takes charge of the Forty Elephants
In A Thousand Blows Season 2, the focus shifts to Alice and her distinct abilities in helping Forty Elephants with the heist. Though Alice is Mary’s protégé, her role in the heist pushes her to the forefront. She even helps to trick the American mesmerist to achieve the goal.
Darci Shaw, while discussing about Alice in the series, indicates that Alice likes to be “in charge”. She also adds that there is definitely going to be a level of “pushback” because of her nature.
5) The shift in the focus of struggles over the boxing
It cannot be denied that in the previous season of the series, the storyline focused much on boxing. However, in A Thousand Blows Season 2, this changes substantially. The storyline focuses much on shedding light on the struggles that the characters go through, especially Sugar. It is a deliberate choice that creator Steven Knight brought in this season, as his focus was to “delve deeper”.
The characters can be seen “on their own paths” navigating through these difficulties, which further enhances the realism of the storyline. Sugar is at a “low point” in his life; hence, watching him suffer through the problems and gradually navigate through them brings forth a distinct connection with the viewers. James Nelson-Joyce, while discussing Sugar’s situation in the second season, indicates that Treacle’s desire is to “help” Sugar and get his life “back on track.”
