Abbott Elementary Season 6 episode 2, Check-Ins, has come out, and while it shows Gregory having a hard time juggling both the responsibilities of a teacher and assistant principal, we also see him grow. All this time, the show has mostly shown Ava messing up and Gregory almost always knowing what to do.

But as I noticed, episode 2 changes that. We also see Melissa and Jacob fight over a gum fiasco and Mrs. Barbara trying to figure out how to talk to her students about individuality without crossing any personal boundaries.

Abbott Elementary Season 6 shows us new sides to Gregory and Ava

One of the key storylines in Abbott Elementary Season 6 episode 2 is the dynamic between Gregory (played by Tyler James Williams) and Ava (played by Janelle James). Gregory struggles to do both his job as a teacher and as an assistant principal simultaneously. Moreover, this Abbott Elementary Season 6 episode takes place on the day of the check-ins.

We see Gregory listen to what problems each teacher is facing, what their goals for the year are, and if they would like to see any changes in the school. At the same time, he has to make sure his students are being taken care of, all while not having a substitute teacher.

Towards the beginning of the episode, Ava asks Gregory if he's sure he doesn't need a substitute teacher to help him, but he declines. Ava is confident Gregory won't be able to handle it all, and she turns out to be right.

Gregory gets extremely overwhelmed by the amount of complaints he has to deal with along with the shenanigans his students get up to. He finally talks to Ava and admits he's having a hard time, and she gives him a binder of all substitute teachers he can look into until they find someone permanent.

Ava also surprises us in Abbott Elementary Season 6 episode 2. Unlike Janine, Gregory, Jacob, and others, she usually doesn't take much interest in talking to the students and being there for them. But in this episode, she gives Courtney genuine advice after realizing that she was skipping classes to deal with her parents' divorce.

Janine (played by Quinta Brunson) had seen Courtney skipping classes and hanging outside and informed Ava. Instead of making Janine or someone else handle the situation, Ava reached out to Courtney's parents and figured out what was wrong.

She then reminded Courtney to focus on her classes because unlike her parents' relationship, that's the only thing she can control, and studying well will help her build the life she wants.

The episode proves that Ava has grown and knows how to not only deal with difficult situations regarding her students but also her colleagues. Moreover, the episode also shows that even someone extremely put together like Gregory might not always know what's the best thing to do and needs help, which he gets from Ava.

Jacob and Melissa's gum issue and Mrs. Barbara's lesson on hair

In Check-Ins, we see Jacob (played by Chris Perfetti) struggle to stop his students from chewing gum and sticking it in odd places once they are done. He finds out that the students don't listen to him because Melissa (played by Lisa Ann Walter) lets them chew gum in class.

When Jacob asks Melissa to tell the students not to chew gum in class anymore or at least throw it away after chewing, she refuses, resulting in them having a fight. But ultimately, they choose to reconcile, and Melissa decides to tell the children to throw away the gum after chewing instead of sticking it in places they shouldn't.

In Abbott Elementary Season 6 episode 2, Mrs. Barbara (played by Sheryl Lee Ralph) has a new student named Justin, who has a condition called alopecia areata, which causes him to lose all his hair. When a student in her class asks why Justin doesn't have any hair, she unfortunately cannot educate him on the condition since Justin's parents have asked her to not bring it up in class.

However, Barbara figures out a way to teach the students that while some have hair, some don't, and that's okay. She also teaches them that it is not what's on their head that matters, but what's in their head that does, i.e., their minds.
