All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 is coming to an end on PBS Masterpiece with its Christmas special.

Titled 'Comfort and Joy,' the episode begins with James gearing up for the Darrowby Nativity play. He's in charge of the play. It's a chaotic morning at the Skeldale House, and Mrs. Hall tells them that they might have mock turkey made with bacon and vegetables for their Christmas dinner. Siegfried tells them that there's a national shortage of turkey. Tristan isn't pleased with the idea, afterall it's the first Christmas after World War II, and it needs to be special. Mrs. Hall seems determined to find a turkey.

Helen is finally back from London, but she is unwell. Rachel Shenton, who portrays Helen, did not appear for the last couple of episodes of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6. Shenton was on maternity leave and resumed shooting for the Christmas special episode.

Siegfried leaves for the Stokes farm, but he finds Mrs. Stokes and Hilda on the road. Apparently, Hilda, Mrs. Stokes's sassy goat, had consumed laurel, which can be fatal for the animal. Siegfried gives a ride to Mrs. Stokes and Hilda to the Stokes farm.

When Siegfried reaches the farm, he properly examines Hilda. Siegfried's initial guess is that Hilda might have had some laurel which caused the sudden sickness. He gives her some drench and asks Mrs. Stokes to observe her. When Siegfried asks Mrs. Stokes about her Christmas plans, she tells him that it would be like any other day. When she asks the same question to Siegfried, he tells her that it would be a special one since everyone's home. However, Mrs. Stokes tells him a harsh truth that they won't be around forever. Siegfried tries to brush off his thoughts. Later, they manage to give Hilda the drench, and Mrs. Stokes then advises Siegfried to get a partner for himself.

Tristan forgets to arrange for a Christmas tree, and Charlotte comes to the rescue

In this episode of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6, Tristan visits the Drovers pub, where Maggie tells him about the upcoming dart-throwing contest. The prize is a turkey. Tristan informs her that Charlotte will be visiting them for Christmas, and he might participate in it.

Tristan further says that he will be raising a glass for Arthur and in remembrance of all those who have died during the war. Maggie adds that Arthur loved Christmas. She then asks Tristan about the Christmas tree he had promised to arrange.

Clearly, Tristan has completely forgotten about it. However, he assures to get hold of one. It's a couple of days before Christmas, and sourcing a tree is difficult. Charlotte comes up with a plan to get the tree from a Christmas tree farm.

However, when Charlotte and Tristan reach the farm, they find out that it's closed. Charlotte brings out her adventurous side; she climbs up the fence, and Tristan follows. They finally sneak in. Tristan begins to cut a Christmas tree, but it isn't easy. He almost gives up when the blade breaks.

Charlotte notices that something's wrong with Tristan. He tells her that he shouldn't have taken the responsibility for bringing the tree or planning for Drovers on Christmas Eve. Turns out, he's still dealing with the post-war trauma.

Charlotte comforts him and kisses him. She notices a big axe. Tristan finally cuts down the tree. Charlotte enthusiastically takes it to the car. Tristan realises that Charlotte has been a steady support to him throughout his ups and downs. In a heartfelt moment, he tells Charlotte that he loves her.

James struggles with the Nativity play preparations

James struggles to balance his vet practice and the Nativity play preparations in Episode 7 of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6. It soon turns chaotic. Elsewhere, James asks Helen to rest and takes on her responsibilities as well. The dress rehearsals finally begin. Mabel Ainsley gives James a rabbit, there mother wants James to look at it. Turns out, the rabbit has a sore eye.


Dorothy returns to Darrowby

Siegfried and Dorothy might not have parted ways in the best ways, but a spark remains. In Episode 7 of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6, Dorothy returns to back at Darrowby, and Mrs. Hall is thrilled. Mrs. Hall tells Dorothy that she plans to return to Suderland after Christmas. Siegfried is surprised, too, but his initial interactions with Dorothy are formal and awkward. Dorothy is clear with her thoughts; she wants to be back with Siegfried. She urges Siegfried to accompany her to the Stokes farm.

When they reach the farm, Mrs. Stokes tells him that Hilda isn't responding well or eating. Siegfried tells her that this might occur as a side effect. Later, she shares some old snaps of hers with Dorothy. Turns out, she used to be a popular performer (Lavinia Lavinshaw) during her youth. Siegfried fixes the barn door. Before they leave, Mrs. Stokes' advices Siegfried to be with Dorothy and not let her go off.


Mrs. Pumphrey accepts the reality

Mrs. Pumphrey wants Tricki to have a legacy of his own. But what she fails to realise is that her Pekingese has become old. Since she insists, James initially arranged for a hormone session. Upon Siegfried's advice, James finally realizes that the injection has too many side effects and would compromise Tricki's health. He gathers all the courage and tells Mrs. Pumphrey the harsh truth of such injections. Mrs. Pumphrey loves Tricki, and so she finally accepts the reality in this episode of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6.

When she's about to leave the clinic, James asks her to stay back and help him with the play. With the majority of the children falling sick, James is struggling to direct. Mrs. Pumphrey asks him to have the Nativity play at Skeldale House itself. In the end, with Mrs. Pumphrey's help, the play is a success. Although little Jimmy mispronounces heaven as hepton.


Hilda's health worsens, and her tragic fate in All Creatures Great and Small Season 6

Hilda's health worsens in Season 6 Episode 7 of the series. When Siegfried reaches the farm, he suggests a rumenotomy in this episode of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6. However, when he steps out of the barn, he finds a torn bag full of laurels.

Siegfried gives the heartwrenching update about Hilda to Mrs.Stokes. He tells her that Hilda can't be saved. It's too late. Mrs. Stokes breaks down. Siegfried finally puts Hilda down as Mrs. Stokes gently sings and comforts her. Hilda dies in All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 Episode 7.


Mrs. Hall wins the dart-throwing competition in the All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 finale

Mrs. Hall was determined to win the dart-throwing competition at the Drovers. She wants the turkey by hook or by crook. When the competition begins, they realise that their competitor is too good. However, Mrs. Hall aces the game and wins. When she looks for Siegfried to celebrate her win, she finds him with Dorothy. Yes, after Hilda passes away, Siegfried realizes that he shouldn't give up on Doorthy. He calls her and asks her to come to the Drovers. They finally get back together and kiss under the mistletoe.

When Mrs. Hall sees them together, she gets a bit uncomfortable but resumes the celebrations. They finally win the turkey, but it's alive and breathing. Little Jimmy quickly gives it a name and calls him Rudolph. They clearly can't have Rudolph for their Christmas dinner. Mrs. Hall prepares the mock turkey while Jimmy plays with his new pet, Rudolph, at the end of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6.

Tristan raises a toast for Arthur and those who lost their lives during the war in All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 Episode 7. He tells,

"Let's hope the year ahead brings what we truly need. Good tidings, comfort and joy."

The series has been renewed for two more seasons.
