All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 takes a four-year leap to May 1945. While Tristan returns from Sicily, the Herriots move to the Alderson farm and welcome a new family member, Jimmy's little sister Rosie.

Elsewhere, Siegfried struggles to live all by himself at Skeldale House while Mrs. Hall is away in Sunderland. Tristan and James manage to bring Mrs. Hall back to Darrowby. However, Siegfried isn't pleasant to her initially. Eventually, he stops her from boarding the train back to Sunderland.

Siegfried realizes that Mrs. Hall is his go-to person. No matter what problem Siegfried gets into, Mrs. Hall has a solution for it. However, their equation changes when Mrs. Hall's friend, Dorothy, returns.

The Christmas special finale episode wraps up with a bittersweet moment. While Mrs. Hall wins a turkey in the dart-throwing competition at the Drovers, she looks for Siegfried to celebrate it with. However, she gets awkward when she sees Siegfried and Dorothy getting cozy.

Since Tristan returned from Sicily, he has suffered post-war trauma. He eventually shares what kept bothering him for so long. He tells Siegfried that he has lost his military buddy Billy during a landmine attack. He feels helpless because he was unable to save his buddy's life. He also hides his military cross, which Mrs. Hall later finds.

In All Creatures Great and Small Season 6, Tristan falls in love with Charlotte Beauvoir (Gaia Wise), the daughter of General Beauvoir, an aristocrat. Even though General Beauvoir doesn't approve of the match initially, he accepts their relationship for the sake of his daughter's happiness.

Maggie (barmaid at the Drovers) receives a heartbreaking letter which states her husband, Arthur, has died in Burma. Even though she breaks down initially, she comes back stronger.

In the finale episode, Charlotte helps Tristan to arrange the Christmas tree, which he promised to bring for the celebrations at the Drovers. In the end, he raises a toast to Arthur and all those who have lost their lives in the war.

In Season 6, Helen's sister Jenny gets an admission offer for a nursing college in London. Initially, she gets a bit hesitant about it, but later Helen agrees to accompany her to London and help her settle. Helen takes Rosie with her while Jimmy stays with his father, James. Jimmy becomes James' little vet assistant, and James calls him Watson. It is also because of Jimmy that Siegfried realizes that he's at times rude to James. James, Tristan, and Siegfried help several animals throughout the season, starting with Mrs. Pumphrey's Tricki Woo and the Ainsleys' parrot, George.

In the finale episode, Helen comes back from London but falls sick. James takes charge of the Nativity play. James struggles to balance the play preparation and vet practice. It gets chaotic. However, with a little help from Mrs. Pumphrey, the play is a success.

In the finale episode of Season 6, Mrs. Stokes' goat Hilda falls sick. Mrs. Stokes breaks down when she realizes that Siegfried needs to put Hilda down. In the end, Hilda dies.
