American Hostage dramatizes the 1977 Indianapolis hostage crisis, which started when kidnapper Tony Kiritsis bought a piece of land for commercial development. However, when his mortgage broker, Richard O. Hall, refused to allow him additional time for payment, Tony Kiritsis took matters into his own hands. Desperate for public vindication and in a bid to air his grievances in the open, Kiritsis forced Hall at gunpoint onto the freezing streets of Indianapolis.

The hostage crisis became famous nationwide for unfolding on live television, as Tony Kiritsis rigged the shotgun to Hall's neck with a wire attached to his own body, meaning the gun would detonate if Kiritsis was shot or let go.

MGM+'s thriller will revisit one of the most crucial stages of Tony Kiritsis' 63-hour hostage takeover, when he demanded a public platform to tell his side of the story. Trusting Fred Heckman with the job, he thrust the beloved radio journalist into the midst of the situation by demanding a live interview.

In addition to a high-stakes crime thriller that revisits the 1977 crisis through Jon Hamm and the cast's performances, the series will lean into the ethical and moral dilemmas for Heckman that came with Kiritsis' bizarre demand. The series promises to expand on the podcast and explore the tense situation between the two men, which unfolded in 1977.

Tune in to the American Hostage double-episode premiere on MGM+ on September 20.
