Apple TV picked up the rights to Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere books, which are set in the fantasy genre. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively published the report stating that the popular streamer has picked up the rights to the acclaimed and popular fantasy series. It should be noted that this deal is more of a recent acquisition, and the adaptations don't have a release date yet.

For now, only two projects from The Cosmere series, Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, are being adapted. It should be noted that Mistborn is being brought to the big screen, while The Stormlight Archive will be an Apple TV streaming exclusive. If they make it to the screen, these two series could provide a massive boost to other Brandon Sanderson novels as well.

What is Brandon Sanderson's The Cosmere series about?

The Cosmere is a fictional universe in which several of Sanderson's books are set. Brandon Sanderson's own website describes The Cosmere like this:

"The Cosmere is the fictional universe I created for many of my fantasy novels to take place within. Currently Elantris, Mistborn, Warbreaker, The Stormlight Archive, White Sand, and anything from Arcanum Unbounded are part of the Cosmere, and I’ve tried my best to make the distinction clear on the Books page of my site here, which will give you a good idea where my stories take place, whether within the Cosmere or outside of it. All of my Cosmere books share a single creation myth, a single cosmology, that gives underlying theorem of magic for all these connected worlds. The theorem is not simple–I can’t really encapsulate it in one sentence–but you can map out how the magic all fits together in the Cosmere using this kind of super theorem. Since all the worlds in the Cosmere are connected, that means you should pay attention. Certain characters from one series sometimes show up in other series. You don’t often need to know this is going on to enjoy the book, but if you keep your eyes open, you’ll be rewarded with glimpses of these Worldhoppers now and then. Sometimes I get asked questions like: Does such-and-such story take place within the Cosmere? And here’s a good rule of thumb that mostly works: if the book contains Earth in any shape or form, then the story is not set in the Cosmere. Also, my children’s books and The Wheel of Time are not part of the Cosmere."

Considering that The Cosmere series consists of more books than just Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, fans believe that other Brandon Sanderson books from the universe would be subsequently adapted by Apple TV.

According to THR, Sanderson will have unprecedented control:

The Hollywood Reporter also revealed that the author would enjoy complete control to adapt his beloved novels on screen. Confirming that the author is building up this universe from the ground up, the THR report states:

"The deal is rare one, coming after a competitive situation which saw Sanderson meet with most of the studio heads in town. It gives the author rarefied control over the screen translations, according to sources. Sanderson will be the architect of the universe; will write, produce and consult; and will have approvals. That’s a level of involvement that not even J.K. Rowling or George R.R. Martin enjoys."

As mentioned earlier, it will be years before the show and the movie releases. Until then, you can read his books.
