Barack Obama hilariously revisits 12-year-old tan suit controversy with Larry David

Former U.S. President Barack Obama appears alongside Larry David in the finale of HBO Max's Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America. In this episode, Barack Obama revisits the infamous tan suit controversy with a comedic twist.

The tan suit controversy occurred on August 28, 2014, when then-U.S. President Barack Obama wore a tan suit during a White House press conference while discussing a serious security issue. The conference was regarding ISIS in Syria and how the US military was planning to respond to the growing threat.

During the briefing, Obama said that the US is yet to develop a plan to remove ISIS and spoke extensively about the situation in the region. However, what caught the attention of the media and thereafter viewers was his tan suit. Obama ditched his usual blue/black suit for a light tan one, which became the centre of public discussion for days.

Twelve years later, in HBO Max's Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, Larry David and Barack Obama recreate the infamous scenario in a sketch that gives a hilarious explanation of what might have gone wrong back then.

In the finale episode of HBO Max's latest sketch comedy miniseries, Barack Obama appears alongside co-creator Larry David and recreates the 2014 tan suit controversy. Instead of trying to explain the tan suit controversy to the viewers, the sketch rewrites history.

In the sketch, Barack Obama is seen prepping for a press conference wearing a navy blue suit. However, when David sees a glass of protein smoothie on his desk, he asks Obama to let him take a sip.

After he refuses to share the straw, David tries to steal it after the President leaves the Oval Office. When things do not go his way, he accidentally spills the drink on Obama's suit. To cover up the accident, he then asks Obama to put on a tan suit because David thought it was appropriate for the event, saying it's 'casual Friday'. After changing his attire, Obama asks for David's thoughts on the look, to which he responds in his signature catchphrase,

"Pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.”

When Obama asks whether he is sure about it, he replies,

"Never been more sure about anything in my life. People are going to be talking about this for a long, long time.”

Ethan Lewis, an executive of Obama's Higher Ground Productions, told Variety that their goal was to close the chapter of the tan suit controversy 'once and for all'.

Jeff Schaffer, co-creator of the series, told Variety that Obama was actively involved in the specific sequence and even offered David direction notes.

Even though the HBO miniseries revisits the controversy in a comedic way, back in 2014 it became a topic of discussion.

Several political commentators criticized Obama for wearing a tan suit for the live conference because they thought it was too casual and not appropriate. The controversy eventually turned into a meme. Obama and several others have since joked about the event, saying how ridiculous it was that his fashion choice became a headline.

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America is produced by Higher Ground Productions. The show premiered on June 26, 2026, and wrapped up with the final episode on August 7, 2026. In the series, Larry stars as himself and revisits some major events of American history with a comedic twist.
