Batman and Pennyworth discovered that the corpses of the mayor and other infected victims were creepily reanimating to spread an airborne version of the infection. Once the duo saw the infected banging on the doors of the remaining survivors and potentially plunging the city into chaos, it was a race against time to stop the Clown maniac.

The Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 finale revealed the four stages of Joker's Toxin. The first phase, which kick-started after the injection, was accompanied by uncontrolled laughter and death. The toxin turned into gas and was expelled during the second phase of incubation. The third and most dangerous phase used this green gas for strength and resistance to pain in the infected, resulting in biting in the fourth and final phase.

With Gotham in chaos, Batman and Pennyworth were the city's last hope in Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2. While the Caped Crusader went out to fight the Joker on the streets, Pennyworth was determined to create an antidote and put a stop to this hysteria, until he was accidentally targeted by the same toxin, which transformed him into a laughing maniac who was hell-bent on killing Batman.

With Pennyworth turned into a violent version of himself, Batman was forced to fight against his most trusted butler until he injected him with a dose of the unfinished antidote and restored him.

Brought back to his senses by the Dark Knight, Pennyworth promptly completed his work on the antidote and geared up to release it on Gotham via his plane, while the titular superhero went face-to-face with the Joker.

How did Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 end?

The last sequence in the Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 finale took place on a skyscraper rooftop overlooking the city, with a badly wounded Dark Knight and the agent of chaos going face-to-face. With Gotham under more darkness, the Joker revealed his true goal: to awaken Batman. In a chilling monologue, Joker suggested the titular superhero shares striking similarities with one of his biggest foes. While Joker put on a convincing act to lure Batman to his side, the latter's butler arrived on a plane emitting blue anti-toxin smoke, which restored the citizens of Gotham to their natural size. As the maniacs lost their eerie smiles, the city restored its order.

As realization of his failure dawned on the Joker, he retreated in the Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 finale, while promising to return. However, the Dark Knight swung his batarang, which dislodged a collection of steel poles, and one of them landed straight in the Joker's abdomen. As the Joker had a last laugh and fell off the side of the building, Commissioner Gordon announced the team's victory, believing that the villain had died for good. However, the Dark Knight insisted that Montoya, Commissioner Gordon, and Barbara Gordon bring his body as proof. Since the series never showed Joker's body, he will likely return in the upcoming seasons.
