Mike Colter once again addressed the possibility of returning to the MCU as Luke Cage in a recent interview with The Direct at Fan Expo Vancouver. It should be noted that, except for Danny Rand/Iron Fist, every other Marvel Netflix hero was received warmly by fans. There, the actor was asked about a possible return to the MCU as Luke Cage/Power Man.
The Direct asked Colter to clarify his previous comments regarding his possible MCU return as Luke Cage on Shawn Stockman's podcast last month. For the uninitiated, the actor said this during that podcast:
“I've had conversations...I have some unfinished business there. You know, and I talked to Cheo (Hodari Coker) about it. You know, he's the creator and showrunner. And now I think I've reached a point where I'm like, you know, we got some unfinished business. And I think, Daredevil's back. So I'm like bring the defenders back. Bring Jessica back...I would say we're in a better position to see this come into fruition faster than we think and and so yeah, we'll see."
Now, a month later, Mike Colter addressed these comments at Fan Expo Vancouver. Revealing that he and his representatives are still talking with Marvel, Colter said:
"Look, I mean, here’s the thing: I have been talking to Marvel, and Jessica [Jones]’ back, and there’s a lot of story left to tell, and I just think that it’d be a shame for me not to pop back up."
Mike Colter reveals two conditions for Luke Cage's MCU return:
In the same The Direct interview, the actor laid down the conditions for returning as the popular Marvel hero. Revealing his conditions, Mike Colter said:
"I definitely would want to see him find out what it’s like to have the power and complete control of the neighborhood and see if he can do the right thing and at the same time, keep his hands from getting dirty."
Furthermore, Mike Colter also insisted that if Marvel's Luke Cage were to be revived like Daredevil: Born Again, the makers of the series need to dabble in the moral complexities. It should be noted that Marvel's Luke Cage Season 2 ended with Luke inheriting Mariah Dillard/Stokes' Harlem's Paradise nightclub. The second season ended with Luke becoming a crime lord.
Colter told The Direct's reporter that the writers should take into account the second season's ending, as there's very little difference between Wilson Fisk and Luke Cage, as both of them are crime lords, even though the second season of the Power Man series suggests that the hero would be using his newly acquired position to do more good. The actor told The Direct reporter:
"Cause I think, a lot of times, you need to commit crimes to actually fight crime and it’s hard to say, because most of the times, you go, if you do things the right way, you wouldn’t have to break the law. But unfortunately, you have to fight at the same level as other people are fighting, so it’s really to hard to be able to stop something if you’re not willing to go to those levels."
This would make Luke very similar to Wilson Fisk, as they both are somewhat in a similar boat. Moreover, in the comics, Cage goes on to become the Mayor of NYC right after Wilson Fisk. This has led many fans to theorize that the MCU will follow the comics by making Mike Colter's version of Luke Cage the new mayor after Fisk's fall.
What is Colter's status in the MCU?
Luke Cage exists in the MCU. We see a board for the Harlem's Paradise nightclub in a scene set in Times Square. But as of now, it is unclear if Mike Colter is still playing Power Man. However, Colter has expressed his interest in returning as Power Man multiple times in the past.
Even Marvel's head of streaming, television, and animation, Brad Winderbaum, also alluded to this last February in an Entertainment Weekly interview:
“I can't say much, but I'll tell you that it's so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox. Obviously we don't have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book. If you can draw it, you can do it. It's dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring."
We may learn more about Mike Colter's status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the coming months.
