Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again returned for Season 2 on March 24, 2026, and has already hooked the audience with its action-packed premiere Episode. Apart from bringing back known and beloved faces, Season 2 also saw a mysterious character join the superhero series.

Scream and Scooby-Doo fame Matthew Lillard joined the cast of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 as Mr. Charles, a CIA operative who worked for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Apart from playing popular characters and joining a superhero series, Lillard was once closer to portraying another iconic character. The 56-year-old actor revealed in Kristian Harloff’s The Big Thing Podcast that he auditioned for the role of Negan in The Walking Dead, which later went to Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

More on this in our story.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2's Matthew Lillard was almost cast as The Walking Dead's Negan

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 begins with a loaded premiere episode where the Northern Star, a cargo ship carrying millitary grade weapon, sinks, with the crew disappearing. While Fisk tasks the Anti-Vigilante Force with cleaning the mess, a CIA operative named Mr. Charles shows up.

Mr. Charles, played by Matthew Lillard, trumps Fisk's authority and wants the weapons recovered as soon as possible. While not much about his character is revealed yet in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, he surely will not be an ally of Matt. Apart from appearing as an antagonist in Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, Lillard was also supposed to play another iconic villain.

In his recent appearance on Kristian Harloff’s The Big Thing podcast, the American actor revealed that he had auditioned for the character of Negan in The Walking Dead and also returned for three callbacks. However, the role ultimately went to Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He revealed in the podcast that showrunner Frank Darabont told him at San Diego Comic-Con that the role was his for "10 minutes until Morgan's agent called," and stated:

"The creator of the show comes over, and he said, ‘You have no idea. You had the part for like 10 minutes.'"

He further talked about how the role would have given him "10 years" of employment and explained how his portrayal of Negan would have been different from Morgan's. He said:

"He’s super masculine, and I just would’ve been more wicked and funny. He was super badass and masculine. We would have had just very different takes.”

Lillard also shared how Negan from The Walking Dead has become a legendary character and added:

"That part goes on. He becomes a legend. Every [convention] you go there’s 10 Negans walking around.”

While he couldn't be a part of one of the most successful franchise The Walking Dead, Lillard's new character in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 has already impressed many viewers due to his charismatic yet mysterious portrayal of it.

Along with Matthew Lillard, the Disney+ series also stars Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, and Krysten Ritter, among various others.
