Best Medicine Season 1's penultimate episode, "There Might Be Blood", is an important entry in this comedy-drama series. Until now, Dr. Martin Best wasn't comfortable with blood, but this episode marks an important shift in his character arc as the Boston doctor faces his fear of blood in the penultimate episode. The synopsis for the seventh Best Medicine episode reads:

"When Port Wenn puts on their annual "Blood Factory," celebrating the gory horror novel set there, Martin must contain his secret debilitating blood phobia when Louisa gets seriously ill and needs his help."

Best Medicine Episode 7 recap:

"There Might Be Blood" opens with the quaint village of Port Wenn preparing for the annual festival, "Blood Factory". The annual festival celebrates a horror novel by author Jeremy Gathercole. This Best Medicine episode also reveals that Louisa is diagnosed with hemochromatosis, a blood disorder in which her blood has too much iron.

This diagnosis comes back in the last act of this episode, as Louisa's disorder causes her pain in the middle of a live performance. As this happens, Dr. Best runs to her aid. After that, Jeremy Gathercole makes a cameo appearance in this episode as the guest of honor in Blood Factory, played by Evan Handler. EP Liz Tuccillo addresses the cameo in a TVInsider interview:

“Obviously, the big mystery or the big suspense for the whole episode is that Greg is hoping for Jeremy Gathercole to show up. And it’s very, very obvious that he won’t show up because there’s no reason for him to show up because he’s not been answering calls or anything. But Sally is insisting that she knows him and she’ll just give him a call, which of course seems completely delusional in the moment. And then the fun of the revelation that he does show up is that we have a really fun actor to play him, who’s so perfect, and that’s Evan Handler. And Evan is an old friend, so it was really fun to have him come in. And it was a big favor because he’s from L.A., so he flew in for this very small moment, but it was so fun to have him, and he was so perfect.”

What is the Fox series about?

An American adaptation of the British series Doc Martin follows the illustrious Doctor Martin Best (Josh Charles). He suddenly decides to leave his successful career in Boston and move back to Port Wenn. At first, his blunt nature rubs off on the townsfolk, but soon he warms up to these people. The official synopsis of this series reads:

"The charmingly complicated one-hour dramedy Best Medicine is based on the critically acclaimed and beloved global hit Doc Martin. The series follows Martin Best (Josh Charles, The Good Wife), a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Unfortunately, Martin's blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, including schoolteacher Louisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer, Suits). He quickly alienates the town, even though he's all they have. Although Martin can expertly address any medical ailment or mystery in this idiosyncratic town, he's really just desperate to be left the hell alone. Instead, he keeps getting dragged smack into the middle of their personal chaos, feuds and fantasies. What the locals don't know is that Martin's terse demeanor masks a debilitating new phobia and deep-seated psychological issues that prevent him from experiencing true intimacy with anyone. But tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered."

The seventh Best Medicine episode is currently streaming on Hulu.
